High-speed trains

CNN just posted another link about there being high-speed trains in the U.S.

Personally, I think it's a great idea!  I have traveled on the Eurostar and AVE and it's amazing.  What would be an 8 hour bus ride becomes a 2 Hr 15 min NICE train ride.  I hate flying and thought I should look into taking the train from Chicago to NYC to visit a friend. Yeah, 27 frickin' hours.  No thanks.

I think there should be at least high speed from LA-Chicago-NYC and then maybe something like CHICAGO-NOLA or CHICAGO-ORLANDO/MIAMI as a start.

Why are people SO against this?  I consider myself "conservative" when it comes to things like taxes, but I guess it gets so annoying when I hear arguments like "This is a waste of tax dollars!", "Trains are out-dated!!!" or "The American population is not over-crowded like Japan. This will not function in our country"  Ugh.

What do you guys think?

I would love the one they've been discussing between Edmonton and Calgary to happen.  But I'm pretty sure it won't.

I love trains. If more train options existed (at reasonable prices), it would always, hands down, be my first choice for taking a trip.

I think it would be AWESOME. Providing it's cheaper than flying. Cause I really like flying, even with crappy security crap.

Yeah the one that was supposed to be done in 2012 has been put off because of the recession. 

I  hope it comes in.  That'd be super awesome.

I would really love a well-done rail system in this country.  Love.  The city councils here keep teasing us by talking about a commuter rail system, I don't think they're very serious about it, but it would be fabulous.

I think it would go a long way to reducing our oil dependence, among other things.

I think the US should have started this 30 years ago, during the last oil crisis, like Europe did.

Right now they're "planning" on between LA and San Francisco and LA/Anaheim and Las Vegas.

 I worry that it will be "planning" for the next 10 years.  Right now, Chicago is working on connections to STL, Minneapolis, Madison/Milwaukee and Detroit.  Hopefully action will happen, and not just talk.

Absolutly.  Even more reason to get it going right now, so in 30 more years people aren't saying "third time's the charm"
