Tipping?

I am getting my hair and makeup professionally done.  My trials for both are next week.  Both the hair stylist and makeup artist are charging quite a bit of money for the trials...are you supposed to tip for trials since I am paying for this seperately from the wedding updo and makeup?  Or is that not necessary?  Also, what do you tip for the actual wedding day?

You might get opposite advice from other people, but I did not tip for my hair and make-up trials.  Both were freelance (ie. not working in a salon, they came to my house).  If they worked in a salon, I would have tipped them. But since they owned their own business and the point of the trial was to see if I liked it or not, I did not plan to tip them (though I did have some cash ready in case I loved it and wanted to add a tip).  In my mind a tip is for good service, so especially if you do not like the trial, don't feel like you have to tip them.

I did however tip for their services on the wedding day.

I did tip for trials of both hair and makeup.  THe makeup artist owned her own business, but her contract had a section on tips and made clear that they were appreciated. 

I tipped 20% for both the trial and the wedding day services.

I did not tip for the trial. I gave her a $100 deposit, part of which went towards the cost of my trial. I will be paying the rest of the cost of the hair and makeup in advance and tipping her 20% of the entire cost on my wedding day.

I tipped both of my ladies that did my hair trials just like I normally would.

I thought of my trial as a regular salon/spa service, which I would normally tip for. The stylist is still using her time to do your make-up, whether it's a trial or not.
