Groomsman cake presented during rehearsal dinner

Not sure where to post this – I am getting my fiancée a groomsman cake with comic book characters for our winter wedding - December.  Not so sure when to present it?  My dilemma – I know typically it is presented during the reception but we will be having a beautiful wedding cake (several cake flavors) and a favor table (candyland theme) with tons of treats (candies, cookies etc.) My thoughts would be to present it during the rehearsal dinner; it will be a formal dinner with a slide show amongst 50 guests.  Question – has anyone ever heard or witnessed the groomsman cake being presented during the rehearsal dinner?

  • I haven't seen that done before, but it sounds like a great idea.
You have plenty of sweets for the wedding, a second cake there would be overkill.

  • About half the groom's cakes I've seen have been at the RD, while the other half have been at the reception. Ours was at the reception.

There's no need to do anything special with your font on here. It kind of hurts my eyes.
  • Both of those sound really neat.

H's cake was not a suprise. He picked the whole thing out and insisted we get it.
  • Another vote for rehearsal dinner.

H is a Cardinals fan so we did a cake with his favorite logo and it was shaped like home plate.
The cake turned out great and everyone thought it was a neat touch to have it at the rehearsal dinner.

I surprised my H was a grooms cake at the RD. I had it placed somewhere where everyone was sure to see it but it was out of the way. So during cocktails everyone got to see it and take pictures before we ate it.

  • I'm suprising my FI with the groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner, but I don't think I will "present" it. It will just be there.

  • I surprised my H with a groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner.  I rather had it at the rehearsal than the reception.
  • I think it's really a regional thing. I think doing it at the rehearsal dinner will work well for OP and for people who don't live in the south because no one's really expecting it at the reception anyway. And I think it's a sweet thing to do.

If I tried to do that here, no matter if I had tables of desserts, people would wonder where the groom's cake was. They would side-eye if it was served anytime but the reception. People down here love to see them and see how they're decorated. I've never heard of a groom's cake being a)optional (in the sense that there are traditional wedding things, obviously most wedding things are optional in theory) or b) at the rehearsal dinner. Down here they also tend to be included in the price when you go and talk to your baker.

I agree with this.  I got a lot of strange looks even mentioning "grooms cake".  I know it is definately a borrowed Southern tradition.  I'm a big fan of cake in any form so the more excuses to have one the better!

Seeing that OP is in Cincinnati, she will probably be ok doing it either way.

  • The rehearsal's a fun idea - I was looking at getting my FI a special cake (either comic-themed or Lego-themed) and was wondering when I could actually do it aside from his birthday.

    Can't get it any smaller.
  • I think it's a great idea. Sounds like you're going to have plenty of sweets.

We did a groom's cake on a decorated table at the reception. It was my only concession to camo!

  • Thanks all, I believe I have made my decision with when to have the grooms cake.  Knowing that I will have so many sweets at the reception, I have decided to have it at the rehearsal dinner.  You all have helped me tremendously, and to beat it all he won't see it coming - LOL!!!
