Ugh...anyone good with 3 year old boys?

My nephew is turning 3 on Sunday and I need to get him a gift.  Also, my sister (his mom) and I had a bit of a spat on vacation two weeks ago so I am trying to pick a nice, considerate birthday gift.  Honestly, I am not all that close with him - I know he likes books and toy cars (but he just got a whole bunch of Matchbox cars) but I am not sure what else.  Any suggestions?  TIA!

  • How about a nice big track to use those new cars on?

  • Legos, trains, or dinosaurs and you're golden
  • My nephew is about to be 3. He likes coloring, games, puzzles, cars, his guitar, building blocks, all kinds of stuff.  It doesn't take much to make a 3 year-old happy!

  • You're right, it's not hard to make a 3 year old happy.  I don't know why giving presents causes me such stress!  It's weird.
  • I have a 3 year old son and he is wayyy into Toy Story (he wants a Buzz Lightyear party and is being Buzz Lightyear for Halloween) he really likes Cars (the movie) and likes to color, "read", anything with wheels pretty much, and legos. Hope that helps some.

  • I went to a third birthday party a couple of months ago and the little boy was OBESESSED with trains and cars. His birthday was Thomas the train themed. Thomas stuff maybe?

  • Thanks for the advice, ladies....seems like I can't go wrong with trucks/trains/cars!
  • My 3 yr old godson LOVES the movie Cars... anything Cars and you're golden with him. You can always add a cute outfit for him (more for the mom) and a toy for the kid.
  • Does he have a rug with a track on it? Give him one of those with the trains/trucks.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • You could buy him a cool storage case for all his matchbox cars.

  • missy, I was actually just looking at one of those - a play mat with roads, houses, hospitals, parking lots, etc.  It's really cute, I think it's my top contender.

  • Andy, my nephew, has 2 of them. Now that he's 5, he mostly uses the entire floor, but he loved the rugs. It helped him make believe. At work, I have a great picture of him, his dad, and my dad playing matchbox with an "antique" matchbox/hotwheels garage and cars on the mat. Three generations, playing cars at Christmas. And I don't know who had more fun.

He also LOVED the magneatos I got him for Christmas, but I don't think you'll have time to get them. The pieces are really big for smaller hands, and the magnets are large. They were a recommended toy at his 3rd Christmas (I was here - that's how I remember).

  • I know I'm late, but my 3 y/o Godson loves the toys made by Melissa & Doug.  They have actually really fun toys that I'm sad to admit I have fun playing with.  For part of his RB gift I bought him the grill set.  He also has the baking cookies set, vegetables, fruit, shopping, and some others.  They are really cute with velcro to attach the pieces and then you can cut them and stuff.  They are like $20ish a set, but are considered instructional toys and have been a huge hit with my Godson and my other little cousins.

  • missy!  I totally got them Magneatos for the holidays last year, on your suggestion.  They loved them! You are my hero.
  • I have a 3.5 year old little boy.  All of those are great suggestions, but just a thought...he probably already has millions of toys.  Is there a local indoor playspace nearby?  You could get him passes there.  My kids love indoor playspaces.
