  • I really like Tyler Florence's books.  They are easier for the most part and he cooks food that people have in their pantries and refrigerators.  I have two by him, Tyler's Ultimate, where he takes traditional foods like mac and cheese or roast chicken and turns it up a notch.  I just got Stirring the Pot.  In this book he teaches the basics of stocking the pantry, refrigerator, but also includes knife basics, cooking technique basics, like braising, roasting, poaching etc.

I highly reccommend these to start - totally not overwhelming.

I keep Mike Bittman's How to Cook Everything on Hand too.  But Tyler is a good start.  Hope this helps!
  • thanks. off to amazon I go. Not overwhelming is exactly what I need.

That's what my problem is. My first cookbooks (received as a gift when I was 8 or 9) were the 2 volume set of Julia Child's Art of French Cooking. So yeah, I started cooking with them.

Threadjack (sort of)  I haven't seen the movie, but I just stopped reading partway through the book after about her 10th comment about how much she dislikes/looks down on Republicans.  I really consider myself an Independant because I tend to land on both sides depending on the issue, but I still found it really ridiculous that she felt the need to keep mentioning it.  I'm considering taking it back and I probably won't see the movie now.

My dad is obsessed with Dave Ramsey.

Shelley, the only Thomas Hardy I've read is Return of the Native. I'm one of about 5 people who actually like that book, so I'm down with reading more of his work.

    Recent books:

Jane Eyre (Hey, it was 99 cents on kindle - I got Wuthering Heights too)
The Time Traveler's Wife (reading now)
A couple of history books (including one by a guy I saw present at the conference I went to last weekend).
In Other Rooms, Other Wonders (Short stories that take place in Pakistan - very good.)
    Olive Kitteridge

And my brother got me Pride and Prejudice and Zombies for Christmas.

Edit: I love Mark Bittman! I have How to Cook Everything Vegetarian. His books are HUGE, but once you start going through them, the recipes are really simple. And he gives you basically a jumping off point to start experimenting with food.
    my read shelf:
Meredith's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

  • TR, I saw the movie and don't remember any political references at all.  I wouldn't worry too much about that.  In fact, from your comments I thought you were talking about a different book altogether.  It's heartwarming.  See it.

Not obsessed here, but really love the no nonsense approach to money issues....and life in general.
And the Time Traveler's Wife is AMAZING!  I never did see the movie, but I almost don't want to spoil the images in my mind from the book, so I may never see it. lol.
  • My mom got me Dave Ramsey's book for Christmas and I do really like his ideas.

I absolutely loved The Time Traveler's Wife.  Also, The Dogs of Babel.  Excellent.  And The Post Birthday World.

  • TR, that would piss me off in a book too. I have seen the movie, however, and I don't remember the character doing any outright political bashing. The movie was pretty good, and focused more on Julia Child than the other Julie. In the movie though, Julie was whiny and I kind of got sick of her.

It's not so much I'm worried I won't like the movie, I'm sure it's a very glossy Hollywood version of the book :)  I just don't want to contribute any money to it because the writer managed pissed me off so badly.  She got all uppity about having to resort to going to a Pathmark instead of some fancy market to find sugar cubes.

  • Capri - Have you ever thought about swapping instead of buying?  I've been doing it for a couple years now because I was spending way too much on books and had no place to put them in a NY apt.   I use paperbackswap.com and really like it.

Hi, Julez!!!  I've heard really good things about paperbackswap.com.  I should probably check it out, but I really love the act of buying.  I like new books.  I know it's environmentally irresponsible, but I building up my dream library. ;)
