Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Need an officiant

My FH and I are both catholic, although we are getting married outside of the church, and having an outdoor lakeside wedding. Since it will be a nondenominational wedding ceremony we need to find an officiant to marry us. Any recommendations or help on where to research?

Re: Need an officiant

  • Call your county clerk and ask who can legally marry you in your area. Maybe you can get a friend ordained online, or maybe a judge or the mayor can do it. If you want something religious/spiritual, try contacting a Unitarian Universalist minister. Just an FYI in case you're not yet aware, you can't have a Catholic ceremony outside of a church. You can have a ceremony that incorporates Catholic elements if you choose, even have it performed by a former priest (rent-a-priest, whatever they're called), but the Church won't recognize it. If Catholic recognition is important to you, you need to go through a church. Just a friendly heads-up because I wasn't sure if you were asking for a Catholic officiant.

  • Call the local Unitarian Universalist church.  They do all sorts of weddings, and will tailor it to fit your needs. They are the most welcoming of any church I've been to, with Christians, Jews, Pagans, Humanists, Atheists, Agnostics, etc. being welcome.

  • We're having FI's brother ordained through the Universal Life Church, and we couldn't be happier. It's free and intensely personal.
