Wearing a Dress that I had handmade

I need some advice. 5 years ago I was suppose to get married to another man. I had my dream dress handmade. Unfortuantly, ( or fortuantly!) my wedding was called off 6 weeks before. I sold everything I had for my wedding, except my dress and my flower girl dress that was a replica of mine. Now, I have met the man of my dreams and I am planning our wedding. Everything is different-- colors, season, location, ect. I love my dress.. is it wrong to wear it to this wedding? When people ask me if I have my dress already, I tell them my story and I get mixed reactions.. I asked my finacee and he said he didn't mind in the least.. though he is a sweetheart and knows how much I love it, so he would say yes anyway. I have carried around this dress for 5 years with every move I make, so to me, I deserve to wear it. I just don't want to be selfish or have it be something really bad. Also, my fiancees niece perfectly fits the flower girl dress that was made for my niece.

  • You chose/designed that dress because it is what you feel comfortable and beautiful in. Maybe at the time it had a different meaning, but you are still the same person and and if you still feel comfortable and beautiful in than that's your dress. Maybe it was meant to be your dress for this FI all along.
  • The dress is beautiful on YOU.  That choice has absolutely nothing to do with your former FI

Wear it and know that it was made for YOU, not anyone else.

  • I don't get it, why even mention that you had it made for some other wedding? Why not just talk about how it's the dress you always dreamed about so you had it specially made.
  • Unless your ex was the one who made it by hand, I think it is fine for you to wear again. And cost effective!

[QUOTE]It's just a dress, a gift to yourself to make you feel special on your wedding day.  It's the right groom that makes the wedding day special, not the dress.

  • That dress, as well as you, was just waiting for the right man and the right wedding as well!  Wear it!
  • Wear it. Your FI understands, and let's face it, it was literally made for you!

And when people ask about the dress, just say you had it handmade and leave it at that. They don't need to know when it was made ;)

  • You and your fiance are the only opinions that matter in this situation.

If it was going to bother him it would be a different story, and if it was going to bother you, you wouldn't be asking the question in the first place.

Everyone else doesn't even need to know when you got the dress. Wear it :)

  • I'd wear it. Don't volunteer it's origins. Some people are judgy judges no matter what you do, why give them the fuel?
