Re: :)

• Mutley, I am curious, what did most guests end up wearing? How did the bride react if it didn't end up as she planned? I actually had never heard of this until the knot, and I always wondered how it turned out on the back end.
• No, you can't do that. Also, your wedding is not Halloween.

In addition, I call shenanigans on the idea of there being a guy out there who "really wants" his guests to dress in pastels for his Great Gatsby wedding. I go around telling people that the theme of our wedding is Gilded Age ostentation, but it was news to FI that our main color is red.
How do I request this of my guests without being rude or pushy???
Posted by aposada28
You don't. You're welcome.
• Most guests complied.   I don't think she said anything to those that didn't.  I have no idea.  I was a little too intoxicated due to being underfed and there being a lack of water.

I bitched about it to another friend who was planning her wedding.  That made me feel better.  I guess it was better because almost everyone has a LBD or a black suit.  My mom did not, so she had to go out and buy a new dress.

Her entire wedding was very ugh.  A non-religious ceremony (outdoors with very little shade) that lasted almost an hour due to there being a ring ceremony, a hand ceremony, unity candles, and a rose ceremony.  Plus there were 8 bridesmaids and 14 groomsmen.  She also made the entire bridal party start taking pictures 4 hours before the wedding.  My aunt (her grandmother) was not quiet about how angry this made her, and she is one of the most polite people I know.

• Holy moly Mutley, that is just insanity. I don't even know what a Rose ceremony is. I also have been known to get 'faint' after the 2 hours of picture taking my friend made me edure... never mind four.
• Just don't...

And about the pictures, you can always just print them out in sepia for the same effect.

Also, you know that the Great Gatsby is a story of bourgeois debauchery and the decay of morality, right?  Not exactly a great wedding theme...
• Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what a "rose ceremony" is.

• Luckily, I only had to be a guest!

The rose ceremony had something to do with getting roses from their moms, exchanging them and letting roses be a symbol throughout their relationship.  The officiant talked for 5 minutes about all of the situations during which roses could be used.

Part of me felt bad for her after our wedding.  Several of our family members made the comment that our wedding was the best wedding they had ever been to. (Our wedding was about 4 weeks after hers.)  Her husband may have been blowing hot air but even he told me this.  Then again, we made our wedding about the guests and what would be best for them.
• At least a rose ceremony at a wedding isn't exactly the same as a rose ceremony on The Bachelor.

OP- just as others have said, you can't demand your guests to participate in your theme.  Please let them wear what they already own and are comfortable wearing.

• Actually Expat that's a good point about printing pictures out in sepia.

And OP, are you going to have a dead body floating in a pool at your reception? or make booze illegal for the weekend? Or cheat on your husband? Cuz those would all fit with a Gatsby theme too.  I mean I understand the desire for a vintage 20s feel, but there's no reason to have an actual theme, least of all one that specific.

• I assure you that people wore bright colors in the 1920s. Perhaps the lack of colored films from the time period is making you feel this way.

• You are basing your wedding theme on a guy that kills himself at the end of the story?

image
• If you want to use a literature theme, and you want your guests to dress up, may I suggest Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?
image
• Maybe you could hire a bunch of actors to play the part of your family and friends.  Then your wedding would be picture perfect!!
• This theme is overkill.  Try "wedding" as a theme.  You can play dress-up another time.
• Make EVERYONE be in the wedding party!!!  Then you can tell them what to wear!

You also might get in the Guinness Book of World Records...for world's largest wedding or world's stupidest idea.  But ZOMG you'd be famous!!1!!!!1!!11!!11

• you know I had a friend attend a wedding on halloween that asked the guests to dress up and he said everyone got into it. The bride wore a blood red dress and everyone kinda wore wedding appropriate clothes and did their make up like they had been cut or stiched together with fake blood everywhere. But I think that halloween weddings are really the only time you can say whether its costume appropriate. I've also seen on the knot about couples having beach weddings and asking their guests to wear all white, it looked good, but I know that my guests wouldnt want to comply...so unless you're having a halloween party, i'd say you could say that its a 20s theme, but thats about it. If some guests decided to dress appropriate great, but you cant request it.

Sucrets, isn't "Put on a Happy Face" from the 1920's? At least she's keeping with her theme...

p.s. I think it's actually from Bye Bye Birdie, but I figured you'd know for sure. :)

• lols, before I read your PS, my fingers were itching to type.  Yes, it's from BBB and that was written in the 60s I think.

She could have some Cole Porter, though.  Although, he was gay.  Have you ever seen the movie "It's De-Lovely"?  It's really great and an interesting bio of CP.  Some good people are in it, too.  If I wasn't so bad at rememebering names, I'd list them.

What's even more sad is that I know all of those facts are google-able, but I'm just too lazy.  Sorry!

• Dammit, I thought it sounded 20's-ish, but I was wrong. :( I played it on the piano once in a duet and just remember it feeling sort of Joplin-esque to play. I haven't seen that movie yet, but would like to. I think it had Kevin Kline and Ashley Judd, yes? Love CP. :)

• Yes!  And I was totally going to write them, but then I second guess myself because I'm awful at identifying celebs.

I directed Anything Goes at my awesome HS the year before I left.  It was amazing and we had the perfect cast for it.  It reaffirmed my love for Cole Porter, although I like the orchestrations of the Lincoln Center revival much better.  I'm a sucker for good orchestrations.

• Oh fun! I've actually never seen "Anything Goes." *hides* :) Any film or recorded version you would recommend? I am more familiar with Porter's stuff from the old Hollywood musicals, which I am obsessed with. The Pirate is one of my favorite classic musicals ever. I'm jealous of all your live exposure to this stuff. ttbbtthhp! Tongue out

• Anything Goes is one of my favorite plays. The number of great songs in that play is just ridiculous: Anything Goes (natch), I Get a Kick Out of You, All Through the Night, De-Lovely, You're the Top... and on and on and on. Such a good time.
