30 Day Shred

Has anybody tried this?  I started it today and I felt like I was going to throw my lungs up by the end.  I'm wondering what people's experience with it has been.

Re: 30 Day Shred

  • Nope, sorry. Throwing up lungs does not sound fun though.
  • I tried it the other day and was so sore I felt like I needed a walker to sit on the toilet. So I took a day to recover, which meant I didn't get back into it.

But, I'm also very out of shape.

I had done it once before maybe 6 months ago, and remember it being not AS hard... but I was also significantly lighter at that time.
  • My opinion? Fuuck Jillian Micheals and her fuucking 'motivation'. I made it about a week. But damn, does she work you out! I really need to get back on that....

  • LVB, no kidding.  I'm glad I figured out I can turn her off in the options because listening to her talk started to get distracting.

  • i love the heart rate up heart rate down thing she does. my trainer does the same thing and while i'm not sure i've lost much weight i'm toner now than i was when i was 30lbs lighter.

i've also never done it 30 days straight though, i only workout 2/3 days a week. i hate working out, but i love to eat.

  • I've tried it twice, never made it past a week. I think it really did make a big difference for me (lost 10 pounds slowly, which was half of my goal). I just can't stick to any kind of exercise that I hate. I start bellydancing class tomorrow, though :)

I did find a website forever ago with somebody who did before/after pics and measurements. Looks like it did make a difference, although I'm sure she was dieting as well (hopefully minus stupid pregnancy hormones).
  • Hey Roxy! It was....alright. Super old people's cruise and I didn't get along with my dad so well. And it ended up being cold most days. But it was nice to be away and not worry about school or work though! How was yours?

  • Nugget, here are the measurement changes from the website. She lost four pounds but a LOT of inches.

    From:http://christopherandtia.blogspot.com/2009/07/my-30-day-shred-results.html

    -bust: 44 ...44 (no change, I'm breastfeeding)
    -bra Band: 36 ...35 (1 inch)
-waist (above belly button): 39 ...35 (4 inches)
    -hips: 44 ...42 (2 inches)
    -upper thigh: 23.5 ...22.5 (1 inch)
    -lower thigh: 19 ...16 (3 inches)
    -calf: 15.5 ...15 (.5 inches)
    -upper arm: 12.5 ...12 (.5 inches)
    -bicep flexed: 13 ...12 (1 inch)

  • To those who've tried it:

1 - Does it REALLY work you out in only 20 minutes?

2 - Do you REALLY feel that you'd lose weight/gain muscle if you stuck with it a whole month?

I've been meaning to start it, but I hate working out.  But maybe if I hear that it REALLY works I'll suck it up ;)
  • Well bummer on theoldies, we have a lot of teens on ours. Laaame. Really though, we had a lot of fun, crappy weather but fun.
  • To those who've tried it: 1 - Does it REALLY work you out in only 20 minutes?
Yep. I think it's 26 minutes from begining to end, counting the intro and warm-up. The first day I tried it, I had to walk down one flight of stairs and I almost died.

2 - Do you REALLY feel that you'd lose weight/gain muscle if you stuck with it a whole month?
Yep. Not if you're eating boxes of Oreos (mmmm), but I definitely lost weight and toned up. I didn't stick with it longer than 10 days, too. I think doing it for real would yield great results. Of the before and after pics online, it seems like people don't lose a lot of weight but they lose inches and gain muscle. It would be good to jump-start an exercise routine, but I could never maintain it because of the monotony.
  • Thanks Poli, that helps.  I'll keep at it and see if anything changes within the next month or so.

  • I did it for a couple of weeks but a few of the moves in level 2 hurt my ankles really badly, so I stopped. I didn't drop any weight but I toned up quite a bit. And it is really hard work, I stopped in between the sessions to catch my breath and have a drink
  • I like it because it kicks my butt. I HATE the cardio sections though... bouncing up and down is not my favorite way of doing cardio. I usually just jog around my apartment and up and down my stairs until she tells me it's time to switch. I can only get to level 1 though because FI downloaded it for me, and apparently, it's not a complete download. I need to get a full copy and heavier because level 1 is getting too easy.

it kicks FI's ASS though... hehe. he's soaked through and exhausted afterward, while I've only worked up a little sweat and am perkily asking him, "so, want some chocolate milk? it's the perfect post-workout snack."

  • I'm late to this, but I tried it 3 times.  The first time I made 1/2 way through the warm up, the second time I made it through the warm up, the third time I made through the first 4 minutres of the work out.  Woke up on the 4th day and found I had thrown my back out.  Went to the chiro to get fixed and put the disc away.

  • I'm late also, but I started it a couple of months ago.  I definitely don't do it every day, I just counted workouts and moved to Level 2 after 10 Level 1 workouts.  Since then we moved and had the holidays so I've been stuck on Level 2.  Which does sufficiently kick my ass.  Throwing up my lungs sounds about right, haha.

But I definitely think it's helped me lose some inches and get more fit.  I like that it's only 20 minutes and that I can do it at home.

Stick with it and you will definitely notice your fitness level improve!  "Cause your stroooong!" :)  Good luck!

  • I did it about 3 times and it about killed me every time.  I would have to stop to catch my breath and drink water.  I'm so out of shape.  But like every workout I try, I didn't stick with it.  :P

Expat - yes it really does work you out in 20 minutes.  You change every 2 minutes or so from cardio to strength training and back again, so it really keeps you moving the whole time.  I do think I would have seen results for sure if I had stuck with it.

  • I like it. Its not really that bad, and its only 20 minutes. I use t on my recovery days from bootcamp, which is like that, but an hour long. I haven't lost any weight (but I usually build muscle first and then the weight comes off later), but I'm strong as hell and feel like I can do pushups forever.

I highly recommend that 30DS just for the method she uses. THe interval training is the right idea for weight loss and strength cicuit. If you want to continue the calorie burning, take a 30 minute race-walk or jog afterwards..

  • To answer the specific questions:
Yes, it does work you out in 20 minutes. Its pretty hard. I would alternate between levels to break up the monotony, but all of them are hard.

I think that if you were already a slim figure and just wanted to tone and build muscle, 30 days would create a noticable difference in your shape. I think if you are bulkier like I am, and have more stuff covering those muscles, it would be a good way to build a fitness base to lead into longer cardio workouts. For the week that I didn't have bootcamp and only did 30DS, I didn't notice any visual differences, but that may be because I already so similar workouts. It will build strength in anyone, though, which will help you avoid injury in other athletic endeavors.

  • Expat, it's something like 27 minutes as PP said, including warm up and cool down. The cycles are 6 minutes each - 3 min strength, 2 min cardio, 1 min abs - and you do 3, so techcnially the exercise itself is 18 minutes plus the time in between to get in position for the next thing you do.

I've been doing it 2-3 times a week for a few weeks and am definitely stronger. Don't know if I've lost weight, that's not my goal. But I have a slim build, so I can see a difference in my arms, and I can actually do real push-ups now.
  • Nugget, I feel like that sometimes too with 30DS and some of her other workouts too. Because she kicks your butt and makes you work.  Keep at it, and I think in a week you will notice a significant difference. FI & I often swear and yell at her throughout workouts. But after I feel like POW-POW!!!

  • Im glad this discussion was started because I planned to buy it this weekend!! I love that its less than 30 mins a day. I did p90x for a while but it was killer trying to find an half and a half to workout and THEN cook, clean, yaddah yaddah

    Thanks for the great reviews!!

Just did it this morning! I've done it three times this week. The worst part is waking up at 6 am to get in a workout, but I really feel much better and more engergized throughout the day. And it encourages me to eat well for the rest of the day, too.

I haven't been doing it long, but FI is actually joining me now.

I haven't read the other responses, but if the first section is really hard for you, try 3lb weights. Or even do some of the excercises without weights until you get the hang of it. If they are easy, use weights.

The first round of cardio - jumping jacks + jump rope, then repeat - is the hardest part of the whole thing. Though those bicycle abs at the end aren't fun either.

Most of the girls on GIS also do other excercise and diet. I'm trying to do an hour of yoga and an hour of tennis on the weekends, 30DS about 4-5 times a week, and I'm going to add some running in soon. I eat between 1300-1500 calories a day.

  • I have this DVD at home and haven't yet tried it out.  I start my running clinic on monday, so I think after I get going with that, I'll find it in myself to get the courage to pop that sucker in.

  • Starting it again tonight. I did it for a few months before my sister's wedding and lost about 13 pounds, then I stopped and it came back. We scheduled our engagement pictures for May though, so now I have a little extra motivation.
  • I did day two and it was worse today than yesterday.  I definately think the 5 pounds I have now aren't going to work for a few of the exercises (especially the lifts & lunges).  But I'm hoping this will bring some results, I've only got 4 months until the wedding.
