Hotel for guests

We are getting married in SoHo and are trying to block rooms for our guests. I have contacted 3 hotels and only one has responded saying that they can only block 15 rooms. I don't think this is enough? How many rooms would you block if you are inviting 170? Do most hotels even block rooms? Are you charged anything to block rooms? Does anyone have any reccomendations for reasonable hotels in SoHo? We are getting married on Crosby St. at the Housing Works Bookstore.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Re: Hotel for guests

  • We got married in the Meat Packing District (91 Event Space) but we blocked rooms at the Marriott in mid-town.  We didn't block rooms closer to the reception space since many of our guests were staying for the weekend and we wanted them to be close to mid-town.  We only blocked rooms for those guests who were out of town (a total of 13 rooms) and weren't interested in making their own reservations.  We were providing transportation to the ceremony and reception (we had a pickup location for all guests) and figured they would just cab it once guests were ready to leave...it worked out perfectly.  We did not get charged anything but we had to sign an agreement.  The agreement stated that the room block would expire about 45 days prior to the wedding date (another detail to take into account).  If the hotels are boutique hotels (like most of the ones in SOHO) they will either block a small number of rooms or none at all....I had this issue.  You also need to take into account price.  Some of your guests may not want to pay above a certain price range (hotels in the city are pricey enough but others are just ridiculous) so you may want to provide several options.  Try looking into the W hotel or the marriott in the downtown area.  Many hotels don't like to block rooms because then they can't sell those rooms for a higher price.  You also need to take into account how many of your guests are OOT.  Good luck.
  • Most hotels in the city will not allow you to have more than 15 rooms blocked.
Our primary hotel block - the eventi hotel, even suggested to us to have two to three other hotel blocks. And to have something at different price points as not everyone has the same budget.
I am having my wedding next week 140 guests, many out of towners.
My wedding is at the bowery and out block is in midtown so people can enjoy the weekend.

We have 15 rooms booked between 3 hotels and others have booked on their own elsewhere.

Not freak that you are only getting 15 rooms.  That is normal. Most hotels will also work with you if they start seeing you going over.  Just keepingchecking in with your contact there.

  • Do you guys know if this is the norm for outer boroughs or lower Westchester as well?  My wedding is in the NW Bronx (top of the 1 train area) and we're likely going to block rooms in lower Westchester (Yonkers).

Unless you can provide a guaranteed amount of hotel rooms (and you provide a deposit) most hotels will limit the number of rooms you can block.  This limit will depend on the hotel.

  • The Thompson LES has given me a ton of rooms. Originally started out with 30 and they have given more. I think it depends on the time of year but they have been great to me.
