How would you address to Dr. and Mr.??

I have a friend who is female and Dr., her fiance is just a Mr. until after finishing his degree. How would you address their invite envelope?
Dr. Jane Doe and Mr. John Smith?
Mr. John Smith and Dr. Jane Doe?

Confused here!

  • Well I believe her name comes first since she is the one you have the relationship with, right?  Regardless of whether she's a Dr. or not.
  • Dr. Jane Doe
    Mr. John Smith

If they're not married they go on separate lines.

    Dr. Jane Doe
    Mr. John Smith

edit: Actually Crane says Doctor should be spelled out. So I'd go with that.

    I don't think so.
I would think it would be Mr.John doe and Dr. Jane doe. OR Dr. and Mr. John Doe. (Don't seperate the mans title from his name...right?<div>

  • We are friends with both members of the couple. Just one has completed school, one has not.

  • Ladies first if you're equally close to the couple.  and like PPs said since they're not married they go on separate lines.
  • The doctor comes first.
  • Doctor Female name (despite title--females go first)
Male name (seperate line since they're not maried)

</div><div>The woman's name goes first, regardless of the relation.  That's always what I've been taught, anyway.

Technically PhDs don't go by "doctor" socially. BUT if this is a sticky subject for her, just go with Doctor and Mr. John Smith (woman's title goes first).

My stepfather is one of THOSE PhDs who insists on going by doctor, so I addressed his invitation as such.

  • At work we address her as Dr. and in social situations I address her as Dr. because she's never told me otherwise.  I'll ask my friend who is getting married 2 months before me what she did.  Thanks!
