Sucrets - budget update

I lived! The completely took technology off the cut list. I got a $200 pay cut due to furlough days but I have a job next year :)

Here's the final verdict for our county

Assistant Athletic Direction - Gone
Admin positions - 10 gone (including psychologist and social worker which surprised me)
Eliminate SAT prep course (it wasn't being used correctly anyways)
Eliminate summer school (yes, eliminate, we will have a lot of screwed Seniors this summer)
and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Re: Sucrets - budget update

  • Me too. I'm kind of hoping our Super cuts them. They still had 200k to get rid of and basically said "you decide", so he can cut whatever he wants without a vote, but the decision fully rests on him and people in my county are biitches so yeah.
  • That's so depressing to hear.  Not just the sports, but the refusal to close & consolidate schools.  How frustrating - like the kids who really need a social worker will be better off because they can go to their closest (but 2/3 empty) school.  Argh.

Sucrets - it's hard to believe you're so close!  Soon Emmalyn (my preferred spelling, by the way) won't be able to move around a whole lot, so that "clawing her way out" feeling may go away.  To be replaced with "she's now sitting directly on my bladder."
  • Lol OWN. I can almost picture Emmalynn knocking on Sucrets rib going "hello, can I come out now? I'm a little cramped..."
  • I feel like there's a whole section that she's not taking up and that she could have much more room if she shifted.  She's stubborn, apparently.  Even with laying on my left side, she sticks out to the right.

  • The only thing that I can think of is that if there was a full time social worker in each of the small schools that they're consolidating into 1 position that travels.

I hate that my old school district in NY only takes into account an average teacher's salary when cutting positions.  If someone retires and they made 100k, the school could hire almost 3 new teachers for that salary, but they'll just cut the position completely.  Yet each teacher is only considered to make an average of like 50k.  Where does that money go??

I know I'm no mathematician, but that just doesn't make sense to me.

  • Agreed. When you look at the money attached vs positions lost it gets ridiculous. For example, they could completely close 1 school, save all the money on electric/water/maintenance etc, and not lose a single job because they are opening another school in September. Just have everyone move 15 miles west and you are good to go.

Or with my position set. They would be losing 175 jobs to save 2 million dollars, or they could eliminate 4 dean positions (kind of like the assistant to the assistant principal) for 2 million dollars. Why would you even consider the 175 job loss?
  • Good point I hadn't considered about the consolidating into a travelling position - that's the way we have it here and while it's less than ideal, it's better than nothing.  But no kid ever gets to really know the school psych because she's only there one day a week.  I don't see how a kid could get comfortable/familiar enough with the person.  But hey, gotta preserve those sports teams!
  • Lacrosse does cure cancer you know...*eye roll*
  • omg, that makes NO sense.  I seriously don't get it.

  • The stupid thing too, is we have 15 snow days built into our schedule before we have to start cutting spring break or extending the year. How about we just get rid of some of those snow days? Although I guess that would still technically cut salaries.

I do feel bad for some of the higher paid people though. A 1% cut for me is not a huge budget fiasco, but a 1% cut for my boss would be difficult as he is the only income. Our benefits were also reduced which hurts him a ton with two 7 year olds and a 5 year old.
