Tell me I am being ridiculous

I had my invitation suite weighed at the post office and they told me it was 65 cents. I weighed it again at work and got 65 cents. My 65 cent stamps just arrived, and I am paranoid that the postage isn't really right and that I need to get them weighed again. My invites are 5x7, so no square charge. Should I take them all to the post office, have them check again, then apply the stamps? Or do you think I am safe just putting the stamps on at home? For what it is worth, the invites are letterpress, 2 pieces of 5x7 (invite and activity details), 1 piece of 4x6 (RSVP), 4x6 envelope with stamp for RSVP and just an outer envelope.

  • I thought our invitations felt pretty heavy but got them weighed and they told me 65 cents. I asked once at the post office near where I work (different city) just to give me a vague idea, then had them weighed once more at the PO near my house. Both told me the same thing so I mailed them with the 65 cents. I think if you've checked more than once and gotten the same answer, you're probably fine.

  • What I did (because I was also paranoid) was sent the parents' invites early, just to make sure they got there. You still have almost 3 weeks before you need to send, so you have more than enough time to do a trial run.

  • I think that sounds about right for 65 cents. It never hurts to double check, though. I probably would take one again and ask about postage before stamping them all.
  • You have weighed it twice. Once at a post office. I think you'll be fine.

This is a great idea! And they would absolutely love it.

  • I think you'll be fine. But, mail one to yourself just to be on the safe side. You can mail it from work or another location to get an idea of the transit time.

  • Do a trial run or add an additional 10 cents or so of postage to each one for your own peace of mind.
  • You are fine. <3 Time to mail them out.

  • I'm sure you're fine, OP, but I think JK had a great idea with a sending one early to parents or something. I'll have to remember that.

  • You've double checked. You're good to go IMO.

I thought mine were heavy, but I only had one envelope, the invite, and a small insert. The scale said the standard 44 cents and that's what I used. They all mailed with no problem. I think invites feel heavier than they really are.

Sometimes, it depends on which postal worker you get at the counter. I had one postal worker tell me mine were $.65, and after mine went out, I asked one of my guests if they had received their invitation and they said no, so I had to mail them another...that postal worker only charged me $.44 cents.

I wish I had found that postal worker earlier.

Did you have them hand canceled? If they go through the machine, it doesn't matter if one postal worker gives you a lower number, if they don't have enough postage going through the machine, you're screwed. If mine were going through the machine, and one person told me .65 and one told me .44, I would go with .65 without a second thought.

I will say that a trial run isn't guaranteed to work -- I deal with the post office a lot as part of my job and you can often get a lot of mail through USPS with les postage than required, simply because they don't check everything. But if you catch it when they're doing an audit (which has been more frequent because of the state of USPS' finances) then they'll get sent back.

I accidentally sent out like 15 small packages once with less postage than was required. 3 came back to me, 1 was delivered and they were told they owed postage and the others were all delivered fine. It's not a perfect science.

That said, your invitations have to be pretty darn heavy to go over $0.65 and you've weighed them twice, so I'm sure you're fine.
