STD and Invitation - WWYD?

My MIL received a STD about 9 months ago for a wedding to be held on October 6th this year, so about a month from now. She mentioned to me today that she has not yet received an invitation to the wedding, but has already booked plane tickets, hotel room and bought a nice dress (black tie!). I find it very odd that invitations to this very fancy wedding have not gone out yet, and I suggested my MIL contact the MOB (her friend) and just double check, make sure it hadn't gotten lost in the mail. She refuses, saying it would be rude and stressful for the MOB.

Anything you think I could say to this sweet, but incredibly shy woman, to encourage her to touch base with her friend or the bride to be? I know she will be heartbroken if the invitation never arrives...not to mention out a lot of money!

I would try encouraging her again.  Tell her you know that some brides that have sent out invitations and didn't get them back from the post office as undeliverable until just before or after the wedding.  Tell her that since the MOB cared enough about having her there to send an STD, she would be upset to have your MIL not attend due to a post office screw up.

A friendly call to the MOB to talk about things in general and then ease into discussion of wedding plans "How is the planning going, you must be really excited to be getting so close to the big day.  I'm looking forward to seeing how all the plans came together."   At that point the MOB will either say "Can't wait to see you, too." and then she can mention she hasn't received an invitation yet, or the MOB will have to explain an awkward situation of "sorry, decided not to invite you after all".

I assume the bride or MOB will call if they haven't received her rsvp.  Threre's nothing she can really do at this point about plane tickets unfortunately.
