Coffee people come and talk to me.

I've started to think about BM gifts and my MOH loves coffee. Loves it to the point where she all but has a coffee IV hooked into her.

I was thinking about putting together some kind of coffee lovers kit and maybe getting a french press and a couple of pounds of different gourmet coffees. Since I don't drink it and know virtually nothing about it - is a french press something that a coffee lover would appreciate (obviously I know not every single person would, but in general)?  Also, what brands/kinds of coffee are considered gourmet?

Is there anything else that springs to mind that a coffee lover would appreciate?

  • I LOVE my french press, its the best tasting coffee for sure.

Some things to think about, does she have a coffee grinder?  French press beans have to be ground a little courser, and fresh ground beans taste worlds better than preground.

I wouldn't get too much coffee, as it does go stale.  Different areas have different coffee roasters, but in NYC I love La Colombe, Blue Bottle Coffee, and Stumptown.
  • I like french press, I think most coffee lovers would like it too.

As far as coffee, if you have a local coffee shop they usually have better stuff than the chains.  The folks there can tell you which ones are good for french press too.

  • I don't know if she has a grinder. I would have to subtly find out. Thanks for the suggestions ladies!

  • While I don't drink coffee myself, my parents love it.  I usually bring it home for them when I travel.  If your MOH likes strong coffee, try a New Orleans based coffee that has chickery (sp?) in it.  It was by far my parents favorite!  Another I have brought home is a Hawaiian brand, called Bad Ass Coffee Co., they have a volcanic blend my parents have liked.  This you can order online.  I'm not much help on where to find the other kind of coffee.
  • A french press would be awesome.   I've even seen some travel coffee mugs that have a little french press built in so you can brew yourself a better cup on the go.   I agree about getting good roast beans that she can grind herself.  Coffee grinders aren't very expensive (like $10) if she doesn't already have one.

  • I love my French press. We registered for one. When SIL bought it, she also included a small grinder and an electric kettle.

For coffee, I'd hit up your local coffee shop and get some whole bean coffee. It'll be fresher, and someone there can help you pick out the variety.
  • Is there anything I should know about buying a french press - ie features that are super awesome and/or not necessary but nice to have?

  • Maybe add into the basic 1 or 2 cute coffee mugs as well :)  We have a french press but I generally just use my keurig.  I think a french press is pretty basic.  You can get them pretty cheap too.

  • French presses are AMAZING. I love the way coffee tastes from a french press. I'd say that'd definitely be a great gift.

<div>The all metal ones keep your coffee hot longer. I like the glass and metal ones - so pretty, but they're a biitch to clean and can break. If you do go for glass, it's better to spend a little more and make sure the glass is tempered. Bodum makes really good presses. You could also give her a little timer that could clip onto the plunger, timing in important for presses. I agree with others that a local coffee house, preferable one that roasts their own beans, is going to give you more band for your buck coffee-wise. Also, I'd find out if she drinks anything roasted with a flavor, or whether she prefers a dark/light specific region.</div>

  • I come from a family of coffee snobs, and we always give each other coffee for christmas in our stockings, from different areas.  Kicking horse (from BC) is amazing and I think you can buy it online.  I think it would be neat to put together some coffee from different areas if you can buy it online.  Beans will stay fresher longer, and if she is infact a coffee snob, she probably has a grinder.

I second the Bodum french press.

  • I agree with PPs who suggesested not putting too much coffee into the basket as it tends to go stale. If you are looking for little things to add in, small bottles of flavored syrup, biscotti and chocolate covered coffee beans could be nice.
  • A suggestion on the grinder if she doesn't have one - a real coffee person would want a burr grinder.  The grinding mechanism is different and grinds the coffee rather than chopping it with little blades.  They also have very specific settings that can grind very fine (for espresso), very coarse (for french press), or in between (drip coffee).

I have a Cuisinart burr grinder and it was about $50.  I love it.

  • Also, a gift card for Starbucks would be nice. I also vote for Biscotti.
  • LA CALOMBE COFFEE. Omgosh this stuff is the nectar of the gods...i'm not biased or anything...They're based out of philly but I'm pretty sure you could order some of their coffee. It's amazing, hands down.

I second the french press idea and/or the coffee grinder. I second the bodum french press. I would also puruse amazon and check out reviews.

  • Apparently I am a lazy coffee drinker because I used my french press a total of one time and gave up on it. Maybe I just don't know how to use it correctly?

  • Chocolate covered expresso beans are amazing.
