RSVP Date-XP

My month board is slow today. Sorry.

I know this seems really early to discuss invitations/RSVP cards but I'm making my own. So today I am trying to do my RSVP cards. Our wedding is May 11, 2013. Venue needs a count by May 1st for food. I know I will probably have to call quite a few people but I want to give a few days after the deadline for any RSVP cards to come in (in case they send them out on the deadline). How far in advance of the deadline should I set the date for? I was thinking of April 13th... is that too soon?

Re: RSVP Date-XP

  • I would do April 19th also.  I think a month out is too far out.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I would say to have them back one month before the wedding. That way it gives time for the stragglers so that you can have your final counts in on May 1. Also check with your venue on when they need final counts because that will influence what you do as well. Our venue needed table arrangments a week before the wedding.

  • I also vote for April 19th and agree with PP: a month is a bit too far out.  We've listed our RSVP date as 10 days before the final headcount is due.

  • Do you already know when your vendors need specific numbers? For example, our wedding is next weekend, and my venue didn't need a final count, food choices, and linen choices until this Friday (8 days before our wedding).

On the other hand, my decorator and florist had payment and final due dates of October 1, which was 3 weeks ahead of time. Knowing this, I made by RSVP due date one week ahead (sept 24) for my October 20 wedding. That gave us a few days to track down non-RSVPers and worked perfectly.

It may have been a slightly earlier due date than usual, but had I not done that I wouldnt have realized tons of FH's family wasnt coming and ordered hundreds of dollars of unnecessary chair covers and centerpieces.
  • I did a full month, even though my venue didn't need numbers until a week before.  I'm so glad I did because I was making calls the week the final numbers were due.  I knew how my family was though- "oh you wanted us to send that in?  You know I don't eat seafood, so I want the steak. It's on my fridge!  Of course we'll be there.  Can you text me the details, I lost the invite?  etc."

I'm also a ball of nerves so I wanted to know ASAP what was going on and how my budget was going to be impacted.
