The Lovely Bones

Has anyone seen it yet?  What did you think?  It just came out in my area.  I liked it for the most part but was kind of disappointed with parts of it.

Also, I read the synopsis of the book and it was really a lot different from the movie.  I'd imagine that people who have read the book might be disappointed about that, especially since the book synopsis was a little more interesting and involved.

I loved Saoirse Ronan and Mark Wahlberg in the movie.

Re: The Lovely Bones

  • I read the book about 4 years ago or so.  I would imagine if I saw the movie I wouldn't notice the differences unless they completely changed the storyline.

  • I just feel like it's one of those books that won't transfer well to film.  LOVED the book.  So I'll wait until it's out on DVD.  I realize this has nothing to do with your question though ;)
  • I really want to see it, but I don't think I'll be able to drag FI.  I loved the book, though.

  • I have not seen the movie yet but I don't think that I will.  I heard so many good things about this book so I surprised at how slow it was.  It took me a really long time to get through it and there were several times that I almost quit reading it.  I just don't understand the hype.
  • I loved the book too. Although I generally hate book to movie adaptations, I want to see this because I want to see what artistic liberties, if any, Peter Jackson took.

  • The book was really good.  Although I REALLY want to see the movie, I must confess that the previews made it seem kind of corny.

  • Having just read a summary of the book, I can't say for sure - but it seems like some things happened out of order in the movie, and a lot of stuff was taken out and changed.  I know they can't cram everything into 2 hr 15 min though.  For some reason, the scenes where she is in the "in-between" (before heaven) were weird to me.  Overall I liked it though.

  • FI and I saw it, and we were both kinda meh about it. I was expecting a trainwreck, because a lot of the critics really seemed to hate it (especially Roger Ebert), but it wasn't as bad as all that. I found parts of it quite moving, especially those that had to do with the family members, but some of the heaven stuff got to be a bit much, although the visuals were stunning. I'm not sure whether I would recommend it or not.

I also haven't read the book, although I intend to.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • I'll have to check out the book first.

The Memoirs of a Geisha movie wasn't too far off the book, but definitely lacking the deeper knowledge of what was going on.

The Horse Whispered pissed me off. They completely changed the ending and ruined everything. I'm still bitter and its been like..10 years!
  • I read the book and really enjoyed it.  I'm hesitant about the movie only because I don't think I've ever seen a book-to-movie adaptation that I really enjoyed if I read the book first.  I loved The Notebook, but I didn't read the book until after I saw the movie.

  • I'm trying to think of any movies that I thought were as good/better than the book, but I can't come up with any.

Although I think "True Blood" is a way better show than the books it is based on.

  • The only adaptation I really had no problem with was Atonement. I saw the movie first, then read the book, then watched the movie again. I remember from a movie thread a while back that most of this board hated Atonement, but I thought it was wonderful.

  • It wasn't terrible but it really wasn't good either. I know that in order for a movie to work it can't be just like the book but it was missing some important things from the book that hooked things together better. Also, Peter Jackson's interpretation of  "Heaven" was very different from what I had pictured so that was hard to get over.
  • I have not read the book, although some of my students had and told me some about it.  Some of the things they said lined up.

I liked it but the psychadelic heaven parts were a little strange.  And the end- made me a little mad.
