If you're interested

These are the 2 apartments we're deciding between:

Apt #1.  Close to work, brand new building, parking spot and outside storage.  Own washer and dryer in bathroom, but no bathtub (which was something I wanted), and only one bedroom.  We really wanted a 2 bedroom for visitors, but Allen also really wanted a parking spot.

Apt #2.  Farther from work, but closer to center of Lund.  Has a bike path that runs directly outside our window, nice green areas, balcony, bathroom with a tub!, 2 bedrooms, huge kitchen and living space.  Downsides, no parking space and shared laundry.

  • I like the sound of the second one better. But the parking thing...that would probably be a major deciding factor. Is parking an issue there?

Hmmm thats tough, #1 looks fantastic and I really like it, but the bathtub thing is a bit annoying.

I honestly don't know what the parking situation is since I wasn't able to see these in person.  H didn't seem to sound like he was overly concerned about it though...

I really, REALLY want a bathtub.  So far, I've been relying on random trips to Sweden and to the US, and that's not going to happen so....
  • I personally would go for #2, it seems to have more pros then cons.

Just a side note, why cant these people move out of the picture? Especially the grumpy looking blonde.

I think the amount of space in the 2nd one is really nice, the kitchen looks really nice but the bathroom doesnt look like much to write home about (neither of them do to be honest). I think the additional space, the bathtub, and the outside spaces are a huge plus.

I mentioned that to Allen and he said she was really nice, but was apparently trying to look casual.  Did not work.

Nebb, that's why I'm leaning toward 2 also.  It's got really nice space.  But, of course, it's also more expensive.  BOO.
  • I like number 2. It has a bike path and might keep you a little more busy during warm months.

  • What will you be doing during the day? That would be a huge thing to me. I had to move for H's work and the only thing I said was do not take me to some suburb to make your commute easier (i moved for him, he can commute for me!)
We share a car and I have to have a life too. I work from home and travel by foot.  I need to be able to walk places and travel by bus. In my opinion #2 is a better choice. I would rather be closer to the city center and have the space.
Good Luck & congrats they are both very nice.

Will you be working in sweden? If you arent, I think being in a nice place that is close to things and you have all the ameneties you want is important. The extra money might be a worthwhile trade off

I agree with Nebb. I think the added space (especially in European apartments) is a nice bonus.

I know when we got our current apartment I REALLY wanted private laundry. We have shared (with 3 other units) right ourside the back door and around the corner. It's annoying and the dryer doesn't work well, but we got the other things we wanted: non-carpeted floors, two bedrooms and two parking spots. So it works. You know, if you have to compromise on something you want. You won't be miserable forever. :-)

I also love how all the furniture looks like it's from Ikea!

Edit: We have a bathtub, but it's kind of small and the tile is crappy. FI loves baths, but he never takes them. So going with the tub might end up being not worth it anyway.

  • I'm goin to be trying to work in Sweden.  I've been putting in applications and stuff.
  • Oh I hope you get a job! That'd be perfect. It doesn't change my mind though. Bike path= cool.

Good luck on the job front!
  • good luck with the jobs. i still vote #2.

  • I'm torn. They sort of balance each other out, pro/con wise, in my head. I like the first one because of the private washer and dryer. But the second one has a nicer kitchen and the tub and bike path. I do like that both of them have full fridges, not under-the-counter fridges like I found all over Ireland when I lived there.

Also, in the pics for the first one, is the shower just sort of separated from the rest of the bathroom by the curtain, without a lip in the floor even? Or did I just see that wrong? That's another thing I found often in Ireland that annoyed the crap out of me because the water would get all over the entire bathroom floor, no matter how careful you were.

Which on is your husband leaning towards?

  • Ha, yeah, that's how they roll with showers in Sweden.  Even in nice hotels.  He's leaning towards the second one, and I'm inclined to agree.

    Thanks for the input!
  • This may not totally apply to you, but try to see where I am coming from with this.   I work weird hours and sometimes go weeks in a row without being on the same sleep schedule as my bf.  It can be very lonely in the mornings when everyone else I know is at work.  Sometimes I feel like a SAHW (with an afternoon/night job and without the benefits of sleeping with my significant other all at the same time!)  And that is here, in the US, where I have friends and family!

So, if I were you, and if your husband is going to be at work all day and sometimes traveling, it would be important to me to be closest to the city to help keep me sane and occupied.  I love going to museums, shopping, making little lunch dates.  Those kind of things make living just a little bit more enjoyable, ya know?

  • Shared laundry and a parking spot would be deciding factors for me. I'd go with the first one.

  • Will either allow dogs?  That would be my deciding factor.
