AW - I can't believe it

Got a text from the ex-H yesterday. After quitting his teaching job over 18 months ago, and accumulating over $12K in arrears in child support, he starts a fulltime job on January 3. Yipppeeeeeeee!!!!!

Re: AW - I can't believe it

  • Yay! Will the state garnish his wages or do you still have to rely on him to pay up?
  • Wait... does this mean he's actually going to pay or just the possibility that he is?
  • I think with that much owed the state would just garnish his wages, correct?

  • I'm asssuming the state would garnish his wages if I pushed it. He's not been a complete deadbeat, but quitting a $60K job and becoming a substitute teacher really made a difference in his income. If I had taken him back to court (or tried to have him jailed) the courts would have amended the child support order downward considerably, based on his drastic cut in income. I may be naive, but I think he will pay it all back, based on his behavior before quitting his job (can you tell that I'm still a little bitter that he quit and was inelgible to collect unemployment?). For 5 years he paid more than the ordered amount, based on my calculations and online support calculators. We figured it was cheaper than going back to court yearly when income levels changed, and I never "cheated" him into paying more than the courts would probably order.
