Bawling like a baby

OMG, has anyone seen that new commercial with sad animals, a la the damn Sarah McLachlan commercials for the ASPCA? I don't even know what this one was for, because I started bawling and made H change the channel until it was over. It had all these sad, injured animals in cages, with captions over their faces like, "What did I do wrong?" "Am I going to die?" "Why did they abandon me?"

AAAUGH. This makes me hate animal abusers more, because if not for them there would not be commercials like this that turn me into a blubbering mess. Stupid abusers.

Re: Bawling like a baby

  • Yesss I cry or at the very least get choked up.
Sometimes gerbers commercials, rice crispy, and hallmark commercials make me cry too though.
  • Omg, this commercial gets me horribly.  I get so upset when it comes on, I can't even watch it.  My FI thought I was crazy when I started bawling the other night because of it.  I can't imagine having a kid (a kid who's old enough to understand) see it, it's almost too much, I think.  I definitely understand the purpose and support it, but it's too harsh for a lot of people to see.
  • CS, I totally want to adopt them all too! And then I want to find the people responsible for the sad animals and do something bad to them.

Roxy, some of those commercials are sneaky... you think it's about baby food, and then lo and behold you are weeping and calling your mom.

  • Yup. Saw it about a week ago. It is the saddest commercial I have ever seen. I'll never understand how people can be so cruel.

Its also the same commercial where someone driving a bobcat runs over a cow and bc of that, today was my first full fedged vegetarian day in 4 years.
  • We have one like that here that the RSPCA plays before christmas, to try and remind potential christmas pet-purchasers not to rush into buying a pet only to dump them later. Sad ads! But very good cause.
  • Yes, I've seen this and promptly turned the channel.  Can't take it.

WHAT? I am so glad I changed the channel.

Koopa, I thought it was pretty disturbing too, especially for a commercial where anyone could see. I wonder if the only people affected are people who already would never hurt and animal. I hope it does open some eyes.

Seriously! There was this one earlier this year where it showed pregnant women and it was about how they were doing things for their babies and towards the end it had a woman going into labor laughing...yea, it always made me cry. T thinks I'm nuts

Yeah, H was like, "are you crying?" and I was like "hello! WTF is on  tv?" They just don't get it. I got pretty emotional over those Dawn commercials where they washed the animals in the oil spill too. But that was more like, aw, I want to wash baby otters and ducklings for a living. Why can't that be a real job?

  • I hate these commercials, but hopefully they affect people who might not otherwise be so sensitive to the issues of animal abuse.

I hate when the news tells about animal abuse and killing animals. There is a local story that they keep updating about a guy who kicked a puppy down the street and killed it :(  His girlfriend didnt want to take it to the vet because they tied its tail in an attempt to dock it. I would like to be in a room alone with those two and be able to kick the crap out of them!

I can't even watch the original Sarah McLachlan ASPCA commercial, and neither can my mom or FMIL.

My bff got one of her cats when some moron kicked the cat out of house because they had a baby. The neighbor found her and took her to the shelter. Cutest cat ever, too.

  • See, I like happy ending stories like that. It seems like the sweetest pets I've known are shelter animals or rescue cases. I wish we could adopt another kitty now, but it's going to be another year or so.

  • I feel bad, but it seems like stories of animals being tortured really shake me up, and yet bad stories about human abuse doesn't do the same.  Not saying things against humans don't upset me, but it's like the things against innocent animals just affects me in a different way.  I hope that comes out right and I don't sound completely insensitive...

I totally know what you mean. I do the same thing. It's not that we don't care as much about people, but you won't see me bursting into tears watching the evening news where they report death and murder all the time. There's just something heart-wrenching about seeing abandoned and broken-down animals. All they want to do is love us.

I think also, you don't typically see those types of graphic images with human stories, so maybe that's part of it.

  • I know beatles, but my friend said if she knew the person who threw her out, she would have punched him in the nuts. But overall, she was better where she was.

Which reminds me that I'm planning on somehow "adopting" my neighbor's cat...

Seriously, I want another cat too.

Oh, no doubt people should still be punched in the nuts who kick their animals out. Hm, "adopting" your neighbor's cat sounds like a fun covert operation. What is happening to the cat?

  • Well, I was out of town. But my friend mentioned above was house/cat sitting for me. Our neighbors are flighty at best, all-out drug addicts at worst. But one of them has the most gorgeous Himalayan cat. His name is Leon. It says so on his tag. Anyway, he sometimes lays on our back step. He lets me pick him up, but he also knows the our cat's food is right inside the back door.

Right before we left for Thanksgiving, he tried to get in the house. Twice in one day. He's also REALLY skinny right now, because he's outside half the time without food, or they forget to feed him or whatever. So I put some food out for him and he ate a TON. I told my friend she could do it again if he showed up, but to bring the bowl in so as not to attract bugs or rats.

He came back a few times, most recently the day we came back. He had a patch of fur missing and was bleeding. So my friend fed him again and tried to patch him up.

That's what I hate about outdoor cats. They're so prone to get injured. :-/ We live in an urban area. Since Leon is so thin, I want to bring him in, bath him, brush him, and fatten him up. I think he would like it. And then one of our cats would stop crying to go outside and play with Leon. Maybe.

BUT I'm sure they love him and would miss him. And they would probably notice if their cat was in our apartment. It's a duplex. They walk by our windows all the time.

  • Ugh, that's terrible. Have you mentioned to them that you've been feeding their cat? I imagine it's a touchy subject, like telling people how to raise their kids, but if Leon's losing weight and has fur missing, they are clearly not taking care of him. Maybe hearing that someone else wants to nab him would be the swift kick in the asss that they need. Poor kitty.

  • They're kind of off and we don't talk to them as much as our other neighbors (we live in the duplex and there's a 4 bedroom house and a studio apartment on the property behind us). I'm trying to think of a way to strike up a conversation with them and slip in, "Oh hey, if you ever need someone to watch him or take care of him, I totally love him, FYI."

FI and I have tried finding baby Himalayans at shelters. I want to adopt a shelter animal but it is NOT easy to find kittens that normally sell for $800+. So someone really wanted him/paid a lot of money for him at some point.

  • I think that's a good idea, mentioning it casually. :) Himalayans are so cute. So he was wanted at some point in time... it makes me sad to think about what happened along the way. I hope you guys get him someday.
