"Mine" - Just the Trailer Made Me Cry :(

Has anyone seen this documentary?  I just watched the trailer, and I'm not sure I can handle the movie.  It's about custody battles over Katrina dogs.  The old owners want them back, but their new owners love them too...

If you remember, they wouldn't allow dogs to be evacuated with people.  So if you wanted out, you had to leave your dog.

There was this one part of the trailer where it showed an evacuation bus and a little white dog had his paws up on the door on the outside.  It made me cry because I can't even imagine the confusion the dog must have felt, or the owner's heartbreak :(  And the dog was about Oscar's size...

Is it true that dogs are now classified as family members - because of what happened with Katrina - and can be evacuated with their owners?

  • I would never be able to watch that. I'd probably cry through the whole thing.

<div>That's exactly how I feel.  On the one hand, it's interesting and I like to be informed.  But I'm not sure I can handle it...  I can't even watch the ASPCA commercials narrated by Sigourney Weaver.  The ones that show the puppy mills, dog fights, etc.</div>
  • I cry at those too! It's awful. If we're out at a friend's house I have to leave the room if the commercial comes on because I'll cry (and then get made fun of).

  • My great aunt rescued a Katrina dog. :-( She's a coon hound.

Probably my biggest fear in case of natural disaster is my pets. Followed by my grandmother's bone china. DIstantly followed, I might add!

  • I turn those commercials, and the Humane Society ones ("what did I do wrong?") off. I can't deal with it on a normal day, and I REEALLLY can't deal with it now.

No - I won't be able to watch that. And where we go, our dog goes, if it means driving to NC or VA or TX.

  • We had an apartment fire a few years ago and I couldn't get our cat out from under the bed before the firemen made us get out.

It was horrible standing out there crying and waiting. finally, about a half hour after the fire department arrived, one of the firemen came out with my cat wrapped in a pillowcase. I just started bawling because I was so happy.

Now, my biggest fear when I leave the house is that something like that will happen again and I won't be here to save my dog and cat  :(

Expat, a family member of mine works for an animal rights organization, and she said she thinks it is partly true, but also that legally, they are property, and not afforded the same rights as humans.
  • I am definitely not seeing that.

I still remember when we had a tornado touch down in my city. I was sitting in my 3rd story apartment listening to the news when it was like "Tornado spotted in XX smallish city, seek shelter immediately" and then the power cut out. I shoved demon in her carrier, tucked the rats in their emergency cage and booked it down to the communcal basement.  It scares me that now I have more animals than hands in case of an emergency.
  • i constantly fear that something will happen to my cats one day when i'm not home. i think about it all the time. i live in a condo and i always imagine my neighbors knocking over a candle or something. i am positive i can't watch that trailer. :(
  • The thought of having to leave my pets behind because of natural disaster has sprung entirely from Katrina, and I could NEVER watch that documentary. I might have a breakdown. I was a volunteer after Katrina in my hometown of MS ( I am from NOLA) and I spent weeks trying to find pets owners after the storm. It broke my heart some of the stories I heard. I know so many who lost their pets thinking that they would be okay when they evacuated, and then lost the whole house.

My mom ended up with a cat from Katrina for a little while. They were evacuating with all of their animals, and there was this person at the gas station who was going to have to get on a bus without her cat, and she was hysterical thinking the cat would die. My mom couldn't take the lady with her, but she took the cat, gave the lady her address and number and evacuated with said random cat. The lady found my mom 4 months later, and called to see if she had kept the cat (she had.) My mom ended up flying the cat to Montana where the lady ended up living. She still keeps in contact with the cat and the lady to this day.

  • My cousin has a sticker on her front door that says, "In Case of emergency there are __________"

And you fill in how many pets and what kind you have.  That's so great, I think,  I will be getting myself one of those stickers when I move into my house.

this was such an awesome story!!!
  • Aw Mags that is such a sweet story :)

We have the "rescue my dog/cat" sticker on our door too. Unforunately I think our dog would try to eat the rescuer...
  • I don't know if they are treated as "family members" but I thought I heard that if an organization wanted Federal funding (red cross, et al) the pets had to be allowed into the shelters with the owners.
