Newspaper Wedding Announcement Wording

I noticed an announcement in the paper that was fairly standard, except at the very end it included a sentence that mentioned the groom's previous marriage ended in divorce. It read quite odd to me and got me wondering, is this standard etiquette? It felt like it ended on a depressing note and I'm not sure why they would have even mentioned it, unless I'm missing something?

Re: Newspaper Wedding Announcement Wording

  • It's pretty standard in the New York Times.   As is the fact that the groom or bride was widowed
  • I've never seen it in a wedding announcement, and I'd probably find it weird too if I saw it.

  • I would think it's weird too.

OOT, why the heckter neckter would they put that in there?

  • I haven't a clue but it's always included
  • All wedding announcement submitted to the NYT are vetted for accuracy, education, jobs, parents, etc.

I'll ask M tomorrow. She filled out her form for their announcement so she probably remembers.

  • I think its weird.  But I think most things that New Yorkers do are weird.  :)

  • You're close. Smack her for me!!

    I am NOT weird
  • Did a Chilean miner go to Minneapolis to run a marathon today?  NO

    NYC rocks!

  • Maybe to spread the word that he is no longer married and can legally marry again? Hm...
  • I would find that off-putting as well.  Being a widow or widower and noting that is one thing, but divorce is entirely another.  I just don't think it belongs.

  • The New York Times also insists that the eyebrows of the bride and groom in the picture of them must be at the same level.  Weird is just not out of character for them.
  • I"ve read plenty of announcements that mentioned that the wedding is the bride's 2nd or the groom's 3rd marriage, usually in cases where the announcement mentions children from previous marriages or older bride/grooms.  Usually the announcement doesn't say how the previous marriage ended, though.
