Another silly poll

H and I ate pizza for lunch and it got us wondering.... Why do people eat pizza with their hands?  I don't know too many people who eat it with a knife and a fork, but I know people do it of course.   I just wonder why it became an appropriate food to eat with your hands, even in public.

Soooo.... Do you eat pizza with your hands or with a knife and fork?

I  always start off with a fork and knife because it generally hot, but I always end with it in my hands.   I'm weird.

Oh and I do not think it's weird you eat it with your hands public or not.   

Sandwiches, burgers, fries are generally eaten with your hands, why call at pizza?

I eat mine with a knife and fork because I don't like having messy hands. But I eat EVERYTHING with a knife and fork, even ribs. The only exception would be soup, because obviously I eat that with a spoon.

I said hands, but it really depends on how much awesomeness is on my pizza. If there's a deep layer of toppings that threaten to fall off my slice (folded slice, obviously) then I'm going to use a knife and fork, at least for the middle.

In Italy, a big number of people eat their pizza with a knife and fork. I used to, too, but I enjoy biting into a slice more.

I am the same as Lynda. If it is too hot, I will eat in with a knife and fork. If its not too hot its hands. One time I saw a foreign exchange student at the next table and he sort of propped up his whole slice with a fork, put his face real close to the table and just started taking bites. I sort of felt that was socially unacceptable but I really think he had never had pizza before.

I chose hands because that's true most of the time. But if it's really hot, or leftovers, I'll eat it with a fork.

Good point.  Probably because I had pizza today and not a burger :) Maybe because burgers and sandwiches are typically dry on the top and the bottom?

I think it depends on the culture.  Here I eat it with my hands but when I was in France and tried to do that, they freaked out at me.

I take everything off of pizza, toppings and cheese, and eat the sauceybread. If it's pepperoni pizza I pull the pepperonis off and eat them before I take the cheese off.

I usually eat it with my hands. The only time I use a knife and fork are if I am eating leftover pizza b/c by then it has lost its firmness and is often sort of soggy and hard to pick up.

This is the same reason for me. Except I also use a knife and fork because it helps me eat pizza slower :)

My friend orders and entire pizza and scoops off the cheese and toppings off a few pieces and puts it all on one piece. So by the end there is a bunch of soggy bread pieces left. He is so weird.

It depends on the pizza- if it's gooey & floppy, then I use utensils (if FI isn't looking- he is from NY and fusses when I do this) but if it's just regular pizza, I use my hands.  I do, however, use a fork & knife to eat ribs.  I HATE HATE HATE my hands getting messy.

Hands if I can.  If it can't be picked up, then knife and fork, but that is so rare.

I definitely eat it with my hands... ocassionally I'll break it down into smaller pieces (if I it'll be messy) with my fork first... The only occasion I eat it with a fork alone is when it's like microwave pizza that was a little hard and needs to be broken up. But that's sad to think of when I'm thinking of nice, great yummy pizza...

Grr. Now I want to order one.

That's kind of what started my inquiry. I also usually despise having dirty hands but I have no problem eating pizza (or ribs for that matter) with my hands.  I must like eating delicious food more than having clean hands.

I eat all pizza with my hands, even Chicago-style deep dish. There is something so satisfying about it. I don't think I have ever used a fork and knife.

If I'm in a restaurant (other then someplace like Boston Pizza) I will eat it with a knife and fork. Otherwise I'm all hands.

I always ate pizza with my hands until I met FI. He's a knife and fork guy. I thought it was strange, but I tried it once and haven't gone back.

ETA: And now I also want pizza! We just had pizza Wednesday for dinner, but pizza and ice cream are two things I could eat every single day without ever getting sick of them.

Just for a bit of a history lesson. Originally NY style pizza is eaten with your hands because it was created by Italian immigrants as a quick lunch food that workers could eat on the go. The thicker crust is meant to be the handle of the pizza and it was easy to eat with your hands while walking down the street to and from lunch break or while sitting on the sidewalk, where ever your job was at, on your lunch break.
