When to send "SAVE THE DATES"

Recently engaged 3 weeks ago.  Just in the beginning of planning our wedding. We are getting married on October 12, 2013.  When is the best time to start sending the SAVE THE DATE cards?

STDs are usually sent 6-9 months prior to the wedding date, so anywhere from this January until April. Usually, if the wedding falls on a holiday weekend or there are a lot of OOT guests, or its a DW, 9-12 months is ok. If most people are local, shoot for closer to March/April.

ALSO, only send them to definite guests, not those with whom you're on the fence. EX- Aunt Marge definitely gets a STD if she's a VIP, but you're mom's bridge club may not get them because you're still working out the budget kinks

First off congratulations!! 6 months in advance before the ceremony and if its a destination wedding its 8 months in advance. Now personally I am sending mine early to beat the holiday card rush to avoid my save the dates getting lost in the mail!

The months advised are great things. Once you finalize your list, send STD to people who live out of town/state/country. Basically anyone who will need to arrange for time off from work to travel to your wedding. Many companies require that all vacation requests for the 2013 year have to be submitted by the end of 2012. Also in companies like the one I work in, we don't have to get by the end of the year, but certain dates fill up quickly so the earlier I can put in a notice for time off, the better. For your local friends/family, a 6 months is generally earily enough.

6-9 months is the norm - I am getting married 9-28-13 and actually sent my save the dates out already because so many guests will be out of town and need airfaire and hotels - and they were driving me crazy asking for details - so i went ahead and sent 99% of them out - sill tryng to sort out some addresses for some people on the list - but most of them went out this week
