Do you tip a pet groomer?

If they are employees of a chain pet store? It's not somone who has an independent shop.

Re: Do you tip a pet groomer?

  • Like a Pet Smart groomer, I never have.

The dude that deals with Satan/Mia for about 6 hours on a Saturday every 8 weeks, hell yeah.
  • I actually asked a local groomer about this.  She said $5 per dog is a nice tip.

I have always tipped our groomers, both at Petsmart and at the independent shop we frequent now.

  • In my case, when I took my mom's chow-chow, who had entangled hair and smelled like a skunk, I just felt so bad for the girl who was gonna work on him that  I did tip her...very well.

However, when I take my dogs, who are very low maintenance, I don't.

  • I would be even more inclined to at PetSmart.  I figure they probably get paid less than they would at an independent pet store.
  • You definitely do! My mom gives about $10-$12 for our maltese-  the same we would give our own hairdressers.
  • What's the logic for not tipping a groomer?

  • Umm, I've never had a pet groomed before and didn't know the etiquette. Better than asking after the fact. And I really don't think my OP insinuated that I didn't WANT or wasn't going to tip them, so back off.

I would tip just like I'd tip my own hair dresser.

Is this directed at me?  Because I offered my advice, and then -- when I saw that other people were responding that they didn't tip their groomers -- asked in a follow up post what their logic was.  I'm genuinely curious, not passing judgment on you for asking an honest question.

  • Yeah, it was directed at you. I thought you were getting on me for not wanting to. Sorry.

  • No tipping?

    Ignorance?

I really just didn't know and didn't think about.  I paid x amount of dollars to have Lola bathed and her nails clipped, usually her nails weren't even clipped so I never thought to tip or that one was expected.

I do tip Mia's groomer because she's the effing devil and the fact that they even accept her as a client is a miracle.  She barks and screeched during her bath, hates the blow dryer, freaks out when the buzz her, and she still looks fantastic when I pick her up.  They should charge me triple.
  • Most PetSmart customers do give tips...but in regards to them not getting paid well, that's bs. The groomers work on commission. The shittiest groomer at my old store would take over $1000 a week home after taxes, the highest paid manager would take about $600.

Most people tipped about $5 for every $100 spent.
