Blocking Hotels

The town that is closet to where we are getting married at has three hotels. One hotel is decent, and the other two not so much. I blocked the decent one, but I am not sure about blocking another hotel. It's not high scale hotel by all means, but it is much cleaner and put together compared to the other two. Do I block two hotels and hope my guests go for the nicer one, or do I just list one? I don't want my guests feeling like I am limiting them, but I also don't want them to feel like I don't care how their accommodations are either.

Re: Blocking Hotels

  • How many rooms have you blocked?  How many guests do you think will need a room?  If it's way more guests than rooms, I would suggest you try to expand your block if there is a chance that the hotel will fill up (other events in town your wedding weekend, popular destination, etc.).  If that's not a concern, I think that you're fine to only block at one hotel.  Guests can seek alternate accomodations on their own if they do not want to book where you blocked.
  • We only had a block of rooms at one hotel, but there were about 4 other hotels within a one mile radius in a variety of price points. On our wedding website, I listed those other 4 hotels with links and phone numbers as alternatives in case anyone didn't like the place where we had our block. Is that an option?

  • We're just blocking one hotel - in our area, there are multiple hotels within 15 minutes of the venue and I've listed a few of them on our wedding website. I'd just block the one (unless you need to block more rooms) and if someone doesn't like the hotel that you blocked, they'll book the other or another hotel further away.
  • I only blocked rooms at one hotel: the one where we're actually getting married. I'll put further hotel details on our website, just in case all the rooms in the block are used up.

  • I would only block more rooms if you are getting married during a busy time of year (events in the area, seasonal popularity) If not, guests can find their own alternatives.

I originally just blocked at my venue, that block has already filled up. I was thinking there were plenty of options around the area until I called around and found some neighboring towns have no vacancy during the weekend of my wedding already. My wedding is the weekend before 4th of July and is pretty close to the shoreline. So, I put at more hotels. They will be lifted if nobody books, so really no risk for me.
  • Is the not-so-decent one cheaper? If so, I would book 2. It's nice to give people price options. Of course, no one HAS to book a blocked hotel, but it's nice to have the option of both so that they are not scrambling and having to do research on their own to find a hotel in their price range.

  • I only booked one, however, I have seen it where people book two hotels. Sometimes people like more than one option.

  • I think this depends on numbers of guests and price difference.  If the prices are comparable, just reserve a block at the one, nicer hotel (assuming it can accommodate the numbers you are expecting). If there is a significant price difference, I'd do two blocks and let your guests decide.
