Stain question

Last spring, I apparently stored a sweater with a stain on the front. I don't recall seeing it, but it's there now, and it's my favorite sweater.

It's a light green cotton sweater, and the stain is yellowish, about the size of a dime. I have washed this thing no fewer than five times in the last two weeks, and it still won't come out. I've used OxyClean, extra detergent and every stain treatment we have, and it still won't come out.

Any ideas? I want to wear it, but not with a yellow stain between my boobs.

Re: Stain question

  • Find a necklace that's just the right lenght/size to cover the stain?  Send it to me and I'll tie-dye it?

  • I should add that I have no idea what the stain is, or how it got there. I wash all my sweaters before I put them away for the summer.

Adamar, I'm sure you'd do a fabulous job tye-dying it, but it's the perfect shade as is. Well, without the stain.

I just wish someone would give a bit of perfect advice, and I'd think, "Dammit, why didn't I think of that earlier?" :( I am way too invested in this sweater.
  • Haha I love adamars suggestions. One of my cats peed on my peacoat last spring and I didn't realize it until the fall ad I've had it dry cleaned twice and it still wont come out. I just wear it and hope no one notices haha.
  • I had a sweater like that, and the stain would not come out. I even tried a specialty product that was recommended to me by a dry cleaner but no dice. After about 20 different attempts I gave up. I hope you have better luck then I did!

  • Sorry, I have no brilliant stain advice.  My stained stuff usually goes in the "to be tie-dyed" pile :)

  • Thanks, guys. I'm going to have at it with a toothbrush and some Resolve carpet cleaner. I'm getting desperate.
  • Does club soda work? I've never actually tried it, but it seems like it generally works.  We use some shout spray stuff or something. Got the wine out of FI's new dress pants.
  • It probably would work if I got it on the stain as soon as it happened. It's been sitting in a Space Bag for months. I don't even know what the stain is.
  • Since the stain is yellow on a green sweatshirt, its making me wonder if bleach got on there somehow :(

Hope you manage to save it.

  • Try SPOT SHOT.  It's another carpet stain cleaner...but be careful! It's pretty heavy duty...but if the sweater is already ruined by the stain and you have tried everything else....why not try?? Good Luck!
  • Sounds like a bleach stain - I would take it to the drycleaners and if they can't get it out that's about the end of it.

  • I'd be inclined to say if OxyClean didn't work you might be SOL.  I have pieces of clothing that I loved that I never got rid of because I kept thinking I might get the stain out, I might get the stain out.

Then OC came along and lo and behold they stains came out.

Have you tried long term soaking in the OxyClean?  I know when I have a tough stain, I let it soak for 6 or 7 hours and it makes a big difference.

  • I don't think it's bleach. The yarn is marled, where one ply is green and the other is white, making it look light green. The white part of the yarn is also yellow.

    Thanks, everyone.
  • Did you use the powdered OxyClean, or their stain stick? They have a new stain stick that I've let soak on the shirt for awhile and then used the powder stuff in the wash. I usually have to run it a few times, but I've always been able to get the stain out that way.
  • Also, is it possible that it could actually have been bleached? Do you use any product that contain Benzoyl Peroxide? I have some purple towels that turned pink where they came into contact with face stuff that contained BP :(

    Reading fail, didn't see this!
  • Lots of good suggestions here but I wanted to add that you may also be able to dye the sweater.
I HAD a beautiful green dress that someone spilled red wine all over : ( and I was able to have the dress dyed black so that I didn't have to throw it away.
If you do a search in your area, you should be able to find a place that can do it.

    Good luck!

  • I have a pink sweater that got bleached at the hem.  I colored in the dyed area with a highlighter.  It worked, if you don't know to look for it, you can't see it.  I'm a dork.  I also color in scuffs on my black cheapo shoes with Sharpies.

I do this on my black work heels! It totally works! :)

  • I know I use hydrogen peroxide every time I get red wine on me and it works like a charm. Not sure if it will work on a set-in stain however.
  • I agree with those who said leave the OxyClean on for a long time. That stuff is the best thing I've found for removing stains.

  • WHAT ARE THOSE YELLOW STAINS?

Because I get them on sweaters and things all the time.

No advice. I normally just pitch 'em.

  • Time for a scarf?
  • I make a paste out of borax, the oxyclean stick stuff and powdered oxyclean for really stubborn stains.

Then i scrub it in a little with an old soft toothbrush and let it sit for a while.

If that doesn't work, i do it again, let it sit a while, then put the whole thing in a tub of water, oxyclean and borax.

If that doesn't work, i give up.

Came in here just to post about LA's Totally Awesome .. I don't buy the stain remover, though. I buy their all-purpose cleaner (<a href="http://www.dollartree.com/school-office-supplies/Breakroom-Supplies/Office-Cleaning/20-oz-Totally-Awesome-Cleaner/291c433c429p8056/index.pro?method=search)" rel="nofollow">http://www.dollartree.com/school-office-supplies/Breakroom-Supplies/Office-Cleaning/20-oz-Totally-Awesome-Cleaner/291c433c429p8056/index.pro?method=search)</a> and I kid you not, use it EVERYWHERE. It will take out any stain on the planet and will also make your stove cleaner than you've ever seen it. It's great for anything involving grease, especially.

  • A yellow stain doesn't really sound like a grease/oil stain, but just for the heck of it, I thought I'd add that liquid dish soap works wonders for grease/oil.  I've saved many items that way.

    Hope you can salvage it!
