Srsly?

I  just got an automated text from Alltell.
"We appreciate U and ur business."
I hate  the pervalence of laziness in communication today. People in my online classes will write entire paragraphs like this.
Am I the only one that misses entire words and punctuation?

Re: Srsly?

  • ::raises and waves hand rapidly::

I do! I do! Today I was having to correct a student when they were writing their rough draft for using text-speak.

I text in complete sentences with few abbreviations, such as "BTW" "JK" or "LOL" and I always punctuate.

  • I also miss cursive handwriting.  My son was never really taught in school.  He types all of his homework.  He has the worst penmanship.  It's really sad - the death of handwriting in general.
  • No you are not.

I had to hide a friend's FB status updates because she does that crap and posts several times a day.  I also defriended a 15 year old who intentially misspelled every word like the kids do these days.  I just couldn't handle it.

  • NO!  You're not the only one!  FSIL had me proof-read her college application essay.  It read like a 7 page text message. (ie: "i went 2 ny" instead of "I went to New York.")

I text in full sentences, commas included.  So what if I use more characters, at least people know what I'm trying to say.
  • I find it funny that you didn't spell out seriously for the title of your post. I get what you were trying to do, but still...

  • Cakes, on the handwriting thing: when I moved away from home for college, my mom and I wrote eachother handwritten letters. I still have them all and they're among my most valued worldly possessions. It's a dying art, letter writing.

This is why I hate texting - I ALWAYS want to spell everything out.  I can't stand the abbreviations.
  • I saw this post and thought, "FFS, she really can't type out seriously?" Ha.

Text Alltel back immediately with "I appreciate complete words and sentences when receiving communication from a business. UR NT A TXTNG TEEN."
  • The invasion of text/internet lingo into people's daily writings is a reason that I am wanting to start teaching English.

I don't care if they're seniors in HS, I am going to have a Word Wall, and it will have the correct spellings for the words that they don't know how to use or spell.

    Because. They're/There/Their. Two/To/Too. Where/Wear. Hear/Here. What. That. And.

Words like that. If they continue to use the wrong spellings or clearly don't know the meanings, I will give them quizzes or something. I'm determined for my students to know how to use the English language properly.

I'm completely envious.l what a neat thing to have!
  • Yeah Vally, I have a really dorky sense of humor. :)

bby- I stll write in cursive, and pretty much handwrite everything I can. The computer ends up eating anything I save.

I've gotten text messages from some of the kids I volunteer with. I literally can't decipher most of them. Especially abbreviations of more than 3 or 4 letters.

  • I can't stand text speak on anything that has a keyboard.  I can give a pass if you're texting on a number keypad, I guess.  That is by far the only reason I never texted until I got an iphone with a keyboard.  I can't stand not using real words and punctuation.

From a corporation no less, I'd be pretty peeved.  I'd text back, "If you would like to continue recieving money from me, you should really use proper English.  KTHXBYE!!1!"
  • JessandTrav, I'm so glad we did that. It is a really cool thing to hang on to. FI and I did the same thing when we were LD. If you have a friend who lives away and is inclined to letter writing, I highly suggest starting it up. It's always really nice to get something in the mail that's not a bill or junk mail.

  • If you are going to call out laziness in communication, click that little ABC button first.  It adds to the weight of your argument.

    Pervalence should be prevalence.

I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.

  • Thanks Bailey, noted :) My English professors are dying inside.
I haven't gotten any error messages today, so I won't be pushing my luck.

  • That's what nd means? Good to know. I quit trying to figure those out long ago. My reply is usually, "I don't speak teen."
Since when do 13 year olds get cell phones anyway? I got one when I had a job to pay for it.

  • Text writing is one of my biggest pet peeves ever. I have a number keypad for my phone, and I still use complete words and sentences.  It's not that difficult.
I can't believe people actually try to turn in papers using text abbreviations!  That's absurd. It makes me very, very sad for humanity.
  • My kids still learned cursive. Chloe is learning right now, as a matter of fact. It makes me happy. I handwrite as much as I can as well. It's definitely a dying art.
  • I can't figure out how anyone could think that any paper or communication of an academic or career related nature could use text speak or internet words.  I could never be able to use & in place of and, I felt like I was committing a writing sin.

More books need to be read, obviously.  I hated being told to read more in school, but obviously I already read a lot and it's obviously needed now.
  • I've found that in my online classes, the expectations are very low.
When I was in highschool, I had an English teacher that would give weekly vocabularly quizzes. We were responsible for about 200 words. (hubris, assonance, etc.) I thought it was annoying, but am grateful for it now. So many students don't know basic literary terms.
