Bridal Shower Invites for Destination Wedding

Hi ladies,

I know the rule of thumb is that everyone who is invited to the Bridal Shower should be invited to the wedding, but how does this apply to destination weddings? We're having a destination wedding next August, and there was no way that we could invite everyone we wanted to. Now my MOH and her mom are asking for my guest list for the bridal shower. I was following the rule that all the guests invited to the shower had to be invited to the wedding, but my MOH and her mother (who are hosting the shower) and my mom all feel that I should invite friends that weren't invited to the shower so that they would be able to celebrate with us if they would like. Thoughts? Thanks so much in advance!

  • Same rules apply.

I think it's pretty presumptuous to think your friends who didn't make a cut want to be invited to a gift giving event.   It's so gift-grabby to me.

( know its not you thinking that way, but that is how I would explain it to your mom and moh)

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Absolutely stick to your guns and don't invite anyone to the shower that isn't invited to the wedding. A shower invitation isn't just an invitation to "celebrate," its essentially a gift requests, since the entire purpose of a shower is to "shower" the bride with gifts. Inviting someone to a shower who isn't invited to the wedding is basically telling that person "hey, you're cool enough to buy me a present, but not to actually come to the wedding the present is intended to acknowledge." It's just rude.

  • Yeah, one of the trade-offs of having a destination wedding is that you don't get some of the things that go with a regular wedding, like having to accept a smaller shower with only people invited to the wedding also invited to the shower.
