hey Georgia! (and anybody else with BOTB)

What pre-natal vitamins are you taking? (Brand). The ones I have taste like ASS. Or chalk. They're horrid and I can't keep it up.

  • I'm only taking Folic Acid right now, Nature Made brand from Amazon.

  • I was all, what does ASS stand for? I really need to get caught up on my baby acronyms.

    Then I got it.

  • How far out are you supposed to start taking those? I told my doctor the plan is to start TTC in December and she didn't mention them. She did tell me to stop being fat though. Cause I didn't know that was coming. Laughing
  • I'm currently just taking Centrum One-A-Day Women's, because it has the 400mcg of folic acid, but I think next time I go to the store I'm going to switch. I've heard (from lurking on TN) that the Target brand prenatals are good, but some of those girls take a prenatal, extra folic acid, AND a fish oil tablet. I think I'll just stick with my 400mcg of folic acid.
  • My gyn and regular doc said to start taking them about 3 months before you're ready to start trying, if you can. My doc called in some for me at Meijer because they're free there, but I don't know what brand they are because I haven't gone to pick them up yet.

  • Bahahaha Fishy!

They're really horrible. And huge. Which makes the horrible taste extra, extra miserable.

Hmmm, Kiki, just the folic acid? I could try that.

  • You can take them for as long as you want if you're TTW or TTC. I'm still taking them since I'm nursing. Mine are an Rx but I was doing OTC before but I don't remember which ones. The Rx doesn't taste too bad; even the DHA supplement pill isn't fishy.

  • Manda, my limited research has led me to conclude that three months prior is a good starting point. Some stuff said a month, but I think the earlier the better.

Fishy, I did recognize ASS, but all the other acronyms confuse me too. (I had to google DPO this morning- days past ovulation, FYI- for your information).
  • Manda, this is off topic, but I was researching moving to Raleigh, NC yesterday... and I google mapped to see how far it is from DC ;) I confirmed that Raleigh is definitely closer to some of my favorite Knotties than Denver.

  • I'll probably take them as long as I'm breast-feeding; I took prenatals leading up to the wedding for the hair and nail benefits, so I don't see the harm in taking them all the time as vitamins in general.
  • Squirrly, the folic acid doesn't taste like anything. It's 400mg, but it's an itty bitty pill. I figure I'll take all of the other stuff when I actually get KU.

  • The prenatals I took pre-wedding were prescription from my cousin's doctor. She didn't need them anymore, so she gave them to me. But then I ran out.

I think all vitamins are huge and nasty. I just get a mouthful of drink first, then pop them in so they're floating and they don't touch my tongue.
  • Yeah, I would rather take them early than wait too long. I have the CVS ones. The DHA supplement is fine. It's the vitamin that is just too gross for words. My doc in Louisville told me that OTC was fine, whenever I was ready. I don't have one here, yet, which is another issue. I've got a couple of recs, but it's tough. We might switch to H's insurance, so I want a doc that's covered on both plans. And then, do I pick one that's convenient to work for my appointments, or so that the hospital is close to our house for the delivery? AAARGH.

I tried this method, but they get soggy and ugh, I'm just struggling with it.

  • Just be aware that prenatals have tons of iron in them which can lead to consitpation. If you're going to start them early, increase your fiber intake.

Thanks! And, as it turns out, I already take a fish oil pill. What do you know? It's good for TTC, too!

  • I take them for low iron. I use the walgreens brand and they don't really taste like anything to me.
"In the old days my ass would be in your back yard picking cotton, so excuse me if I don't put much stock in how f*cking awesome the old days were." -Nuggs
  • Squirrly, which CVS ones are you taking? I take the ones in the double pack, pink oval pill with vitamins and gel cap for dha and have had a lot of success on them. I once tried switching to a different brand and got really sick on the new brand.

Manda, my doc said to start taking 6 months before TTC. That way you're body is good to go, and you have time to sort out which ones work best for you. I've been taking the CVS prenatals for over 13 months now and they have done great things for my body (except for the non-pregnancy part, but I can't really blame them for that.)
  • I take the Target Brand version for various non-baby related reasons and they seem to be the best that I've found so far. They have an almost candy-like coating like Advil does so they don't really taste like anything and don't get stuck in my throat like a lot of big pills do. They go down pretty smoothly. :) The bottle has a picture of them on the front and they're a brownish color (like Advil).
  • kristi- I want you to get pregnant soon cause I know that's what you want, but I also think it would be so awesome if we end up getting pregnant the same time. :-D

Then you'd better hurry up :P It's been 11 months already and I'm going to a fertility specialist in 3 months to start testing.
  • I take these enormous horse pills that I bought on clearance at WalGreens or CVS or something a long while back, because I feel like my kid should know from the start, I care, but not enough to pay full price.
On bed rest since Groundhog's Day and every day since has been exactly the same.

  • Kristi- Well I'm not starting til December. One last kid-free Disney trip! Sucks that you're having such a hard time though. Boo! I'm terrified that we'll have difficulty. We've already decided we won't do fertility treatments if it doesn't just happen. The adoption door is still open, though.

TJ for the win! That was hilarious. And I'm shocked it took you so long to find your way into the BOTB thread.
  • How about I'll just be 3 months ahead of you then? We can still be pregnant together and I can show you all the fun you're going to have ;)
  • TJ, did you learn that from my mom?
