Thank you card wording to someone I don't really know

Hi,  This is my first post so please bare with me. 

Last night I met a colleague of my FI's dad's.  They are apparently fairly weatlhy, and though I've never met them and my FI's only met them once or twice, they gave us a card with a very generous cash gift.  This will be my first thank you card and it's to someone who's practically a stranger, so I'm afraid that writing "Thank you so much for your generous gift" sounds awkward somehow?  If it were someone I knew better, I'd have a better idea of what I can/can't or should/shouldn't write. 

I guess my question here is does that sound awkward or should I write more to be polite?

I'd add something a few more little sentences to what edie wrote.  Maybe "It was lovely to meet you at XYZ.  Thank you again for your thoughtful gift."

Are they going to your wedding? What about:

Dear so and so:

We are so grateful for you to think of us, and sincerely appreciate your card and very generous gift. FI and I really enjoyed your company at <event from the other night /> and we look forward to seeing you at <wedding/other event coming up>.
