    I'm not at all religious, and for me it would be ridiculous to stay married because god said so. BUT if that's your belief, then honestly, I respect that reasoning more than just "we won't divorce because we made vows, and that means that no matter what, we will both always be committed to making it work." Believing that because you made a committment to god, you're bound to do something forever isn't my choice but it's at least based on something beyond just blind innocence and stupidity.

    This, exactly.

    I wouldn't judge someone for saying "We're staying married because we made a commitment to God," but I think Em's explanation up there is more in line with what I believe.  H is agnostic, but he's very much against divorce because as he put it "I made a promise." 

    Sometimes things don't work out.  Sometimes terrible things happen that split a couple up.  I may be off-base, but I don't think that God wants two people to be miserable for life just because they made a promise to him, and due to circumstances, it just didn't work out.

    I just don't understand how, if you believe in a good and loving God, you could believe he would want you to stay in a loveless or even abusive marriage just because it's a committment.
