Poll: What Beatles songs do you dislike?

The musician thread got me thinking about this, and it's always a good cocktail party question if you're trying to get to know people. Most of us normal people like the Beatles in at least some sense, but are there any Beatles songs or categories of Beatles songs that you don't like?

Asking this question, I once learned that one of my brothers hates the entirety of the Revolver album, which I found shocking.

For me:
I'm not big on some of Paul's "let me tell you a story about a bunch of people I made up" songs like Rocky Raccoon, Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da (shudder), and Maxwell's Silver Hammer (triple shudder).

I also don't like the songs where John makes veiled domestic violence threats, like Run for Your Life and You Can't Do That.

And go!

  • some of the early stuff is kind of annoying, 8 days a week stands out.

  • Very interesting thread sarah... I'll play.

ITA with your point on Run For Your Life. I also don't get Revolution 9 or pretty much anything Ringo wrote and sang lead on (meaning songs that had both aspects), like Good Night, Octopus' Garden or Don't Pass Me By.

  • That reminds me shelly, least favorite album? Beatles for Sale.

  • Hmmm, I might have to go with A Hard Day's Night, but I do like the movie.  Its pretty funny.  Is that weird?

  • Beatles for Sale is kind of a depressing album. They even look sad and cold in the picture on the cover.

I gotta admit, though, "I'm a Loser" is a guilty pleasure. So weird, and so great.

Not a big fan of Revolution 9 either. I never got that.

Well, AHDN is one of my fave albums (so yes you're weird, haha), but I think it's possible to like the movie but not all the music. You could probably just stop watching after they bust Ringo from the police station. :)

Nebb, where are you? And arb, fishy?

Sarah, I'm also surprised that your brother dislikes the whole album of Revolver. I mean, the whole thing?

  • Sarah, wasn't Beatles for Sale like their 4th album release of 1964? I think that's why it was mostly half-assed covers, because they were under pressure to spit out another album. I'm still amazed that they did all that and still managed to have separate, fantastic singles out.

I can appreciate the novelty of Revolution 9, but I listened to it the first time I heard the White Album, then never again.

Okay, someone else needs to talk now. I feel like I'm letting the crazy show a little too much. Embarassed

  • AHDN is one of my favorite albums too.... but that's the whole point of this exercise. :) It's fun to hear what bugs people about the Beatles.

Yes, he hates the whole Revolver album, thinks it's too poppy or something. And it's my other favorite album, too, so definitely pretty funny.

I think you're right that it was released in a year when they'd already done a lot of other stuff. I can't believe how much output they had there right at the beginning.

Don't worry about the crazy - I think you and I could make this a two-pager by ourselves. :)

  • Eleanor Rigsby. Or Hello Goodbye. Or Penny Lane. Or the entire Beatles 1 cd.
  • *gasp* Jess isn't into mainstream Beatles! ;) I think that's alright, but I'd like to hear more about that.

Sarah, thanks for the solidarity! I am still amused at your brother though... Out of all their albums, I would never peg Revolver as being the poppy one.

I'm also not in love with the entire medley at the end of Abbey Road. And I Want You (She's So Heavy) goes on for 10 minutes too long. This became painfully apparent to me while playing it on Beatles Rock Band. I thought my arm would fall off.

  • Gah. I can't read. I take that back.

I thought it said which do you like.

    I don't know about which ones I don't like.
  • Sorry, Beatles. Didn't mean to make you think that I was interesting. ;)

I love The Beatles. As does my nephew aka George Harrison. We listen to The Beatles a wholeeee lot..

  • edited January 2010
Haha, that's kinda too bad about the misunderstanding jess. That would have been a first for me to meet someone who liked everything but mainstream Beatles. Just because popular music is what their legacy was built on.

Edit: OMG yes, I saw your nephew's pic as George Harrison the other night. I don't know if you saw my comment about it, but it was pretty much the cutest thing I've ever seen.

  • Hehehe JessandTrav, I was starting to think we had a situation on our hands. :)

I kinda like the Abbey Road medley, even though I know it was a half-assed idea to pull an album together from a bunch of half-written songs. Or maybe it's just that I love Golden Slumbers so much that it makes the whole album worth it. I kind of can't wait to have a baby so I can sing Golden Slumbers to it.

I'm not big on some of the Magical Mystery Tour filler songs, like Please Don't Be Long. And hm... Act Naturally. That song is the worst earworm.

I know my brother is a nut. When he first told me, I thought he was confused and was naming the wrong album or something, but then he said he didn't like the songs with all the trumpets like Got to Get You into my Life, and I realized he knew what he meant... :P

A possible (and definitely polarizing) corollary to this poll: The Across the Universe movie? Thumbs up? Thumbs down?

  • This may or may not work---

I tried to find a video of him singing the Beatles, but found him playing the guitar to a kid-singer's version of Folsom Prison Blues.

You've got to check him out. He cracks me up.
  • *keels over from sheer adorableness of jess' nephew*

I totally forgot about Magical Mystery Tour. I would actually put that whole movie in the dislike category. Aw, all this Beatle dissatisfaction is making me feel guilty.

Golden Slumbers would make such a cute lullaby sarah. I've always considered naming my future daughter Julia, for obvious reasons.

Oh, and this doesn't represent any one song, but I sometimes dislike it on the earlier songs where they would double track their vocals, but have major discrepancies between the two vocal tracks (like note-wise or embellishments). I blame George Martin more for that though. I love it when I find versions of double-tracked songs that are stripped down to one track (like And I Love Her - the version from AHDN).

  • Folsom Prison Blues? Somebody's teaching your nephew to have awesome taste in music.

We can switch to like if you prefer, Beatles. :) Which albums/songs are your favorites?

If I was going to pick early, middle, and late favorite albums, they would be AHDN, Revolver, and Abbey Road.

  • Yeah, there's this kid-artist that he likes---Ralph Colvert. He used to be featured on Disney sometimes. He put out a cd called Rhyming Circus, and on it,the songs sound more like real songs. He did a Beatles-esque song, "the folsom daycare blues" etc.

It makes children's music far more tolerable.

And yes, we take pride that he likes The Beatles over The Wiggles or Kidz Bop.

Sarah, you're awesome because I too have to split it up into early, middle, and late. I'm a AHDN, Rubber Soul, Let It Be (Naked) kind of a girl. But we don't have to switch to "like" stuff... it's healthy to say these things out loud, like when you disagree with a stance that your general political party has. :)

Jess, that video is the cutest. He's really rocking out!

So tell me Sarah, which Beatles songs, if any, will you have in or at your wedding?

Edit: I actually haven't seen Across the Universe... I wasn't sure if I wanted to waste my money in case it sucked or offended me. I'll probably rent it on netflix. What did you guys think of it?

On Across the Universe: hated hated Hated HATED it. It's actually one of the worst fights FI and I ever had, because he loved it so much and meanwhile I was hoping somebody would pull the fire alarm so we could get out of there. A lot of the song covers are actually quite good (If I Fell in particular, which is almost a capella but with the low harmony part picked out on a single guitar string) but the story is just so literal. Like there's this character Prudence, and she shows up by coming in the bathroom window (ho ho), but she's gay, so at one point she hides in the closet, and GUESS WHAT song they sing to bring her out?

    Whew.

Anyway - not sure yet about what we would play for our wedding. I think if it's during the dancing, I would go with some of the really mainstream stuff from One because that's what people know. Our first dance is going to be Sinatra's cover of "The Way You Look Tonight" so that we can do a foxtrot.

  • Ahahaha, thanks for the very descriptive take on ATU. That's what I was afraid of, but I'll still give it a shot (and be able to press "stop" if it gets my hackles up).

Ooh, the foxtrot. How very fancy, and what a great song! I resisted and didn't go overboard on Beatles stuff for our wedding (at least I don't think I did). After all, we didn't want to have a theme, even if it is the Beatles. All You Need Is Love was our processional, and the mother/son dance was to the Naked version of Across the Universe (H's mom is one of us, even though H isn't a huge Beatles fan). Finally, all of our tables were named after our favorite video games, so ours of course was Beatles Rock Band.

  • Actually, I should add to my review that I'm not a fan of Evan Rachel Wood or her bitchface. So there's that.

That sounds like just the right amount of Beatles touches! I could probably talk FI into a few things, but we'll have to see. Across the Universe is his favorite Beatles song. (Among his dislikes - Here, There and Everywhere. People are weird.)
