Well, I screwed up again-feeling sorry for myself

NOTHING about our anniversary trip to Chicago has gone right. First, I book the wrong hotel. I wanted to be in downtown Chicago and ended up in a hotel IN the airport. I had a total breakdown over that (thanks, hormones). I've come to terms with that.

We booked our flight on Sunday. I just sent MIL our times so they could pick us up and take us to the airport. She writes back...why are you leaving so late in the day, I thought you took off? So I go and look again. We're leaving Friday at 8:20 PM. I checked and checked and checked to make sure the reservation was right. And there's nothing we can do about it, everything in the morning is sold out (if we even wanted to pay the $300 to change our tickets). So we've lost an entire day.

And just little crappy things. The G2G totally fell through, thanks to my new BC, I randomly started spotting today and it's going to be cold and rainy the entire time we're there.

I wasn't all ohhh this is our first wedding anniversary, it has to be perfect!!!111!!! But I was REALLY looking forward to exploring a new city and spending good quality time with H. Now, I dont' even want to go, but we can't afford to just let it all go. Just...Frown

  • Aw, I am sorry so much shiit is happening to you!! But I am sure once you guys get there you will have fun. Just try and keep your head up and think about how much fun you guys will have once you are there!

I'm sorry, LVB. But it will be okay. You two will have a wonderful weekend regardless of the hangups.

  • Maybe you can still work with Friday a little. Set up some morning massages or go shopping, something fun together even if it's in your own town.

It will still be a great trip, I'm sure of it!
  • I feel like we wasted so much money! We took Friday off of work (unpaid for me), paid too much for the hotel (I offered Priceline more than what I could book it straight from them for) and we have to have more cabs now. I've probably wasted....$400 bucks? And lost a day and however much travel time between the far ass hotel and anywhere else we want to go.

I don't get it. I successfully planned an almost 3 month solo trip to Europe. I didn't have a single thing go wrong. And yet I can't plan 4 days in Chicago?

I was thinking maybe massages or something. But H has never been, I don't know if he would be into it.

I'm sure you guys will still have a great time, even while you're at the airport and have an early flight home. Hey, at least you'll be at the airport already so catching the early flight will be easy right?

I've made some silly travel mistakes before, it happens to the best of us. When I was in Germany I bought a plane ticket to go visit my friend in London and got all excited about it. The flight was at 7:15 so I thought I had plenty of time to get there after my classes were over. Well I forgot Europeans do the 24 hour clock and I turned up for my flight and all the people at the airport thought I was crazy because my flight was actually at 7:15 AM and I missed it by about 11 hours.

So really, it happens to everyone. And you will still get plenty of quality time together, I'm sure you will still end up having a great time.
  • Why not treat yourself to a lunch at a really awesome restaurant in your home town the day of your flight so that you can still enjoy all the time you've taken off?
  • Sorry, girl. I'm sure once you guys get there you'll have a great time. Cheer up.

  • :::hugs::: I'm sorry LVB :( But just think, once you get away from everything, you could just hang out in the hotel room and enjoy each other :) And the weather can change at the drop of a hat. AND AND I was in Chicago when was kind of chilly and rainy and it's still one of the most awesome cities I've been to.

My flight is leaving my hometown late. Meant to leave in the morning. But my return flight is correct, it's at night as it's supposed to be.

  • I'm sorry, LVB, I'm sure it will turn out better than you're expecting. If there's a bright spot here, it's that at least at this point your expectations are low so it's gotta be better than you're fearing.

I'm sure it'll be great - *hugs* - if I was in Chicago this weekend I'd GTG with you just to make you feel like it wasn't a total loss!

This is the DUMBEST question ever (I spelled it dummest the first time he). Do you have a rain jacket, umbrella, or just stay inside as much as possible? We don't walk around our town, we drive everywhere. So I'm not sure how to be a tourist in the rain...

  • I'm so sorry LVB. Sometimes everything just goes wrong. I think the idea of doing something special during the day before your flight is a good one. I'm assuming you checked Thursday night flights too with no availability?

If it makes you feel any better, I have had some pretty major travel screw-ups over the years. The best was probably the time I realized the day before our trip to England that my US passport was expired, which would have made getting back into the US impossible (I'm a UK citizen as well, so going was no problem). Multiple calls to the State Dept to check whether I could just come home on my UK passport later, we had to reschedule our flights and pay for passport expediting. My dad was not impressed. And that definitely cost more than $400.

    Sorry, I misunderstood.

Depending on the airline and how many flights there are on Friday you might be able to go to the airport and try to convince them to let you an an earlier flight if there is room. That might be more trouble than it's worth though.

I actually thought about you this morning when I was watching the news and they were talking about the weather. I doubt it will be a total wash, but I did warn you that our weather is cray cray and this happening is not out of the "norm" for this time of year.

I hear you about the travel time, but you will still have all day Saturday and time on Sunday ( I hope) to enjoy the city. It is ALWAYS busy during the weekend, regardless of the weather. They aren't saying that it will be storming, just chances of rain. Knowing this place, it won't rain at all and the weather will be fine.

Don't feel down about things that, at this point, you have no control over. Enjoy the great time that you will still have with your H and make the best of it!

*Hugs* LVB. I'm sorry. I'm sure you'll still have a great trip! And I definitely agree with doing something fun on Friday before the plane leaves. Have an awesome lunch together and do something relaxing! Most places are way less crowded on week days than weekends.

ETA: Nevermind again. I fail reading comprehension today.
  • That's a good point, Anna. LVB, you could try stand-by, but then you risk spending the whole day at the airport only to end up flying on your same flight. I'd call the airline and ask what they think your chances with stand-by are - if they're good, it might be worth trying, but if not you're better off just enjoying your day.

I would have a light rain jacket and an umbrella for walking. And try to schedule trips to museums and stuff like that. The metro is your friend! It's so easy to get around Chicago on the metro and you should be able to grab it right at the airport. Are you staying at Midway or O'Hare? I've only ever flown into Midway.

  • I did check Thursday flights. It's only a grand a person. To go an hour and 20 min away. Yeah. Although that does make me feel better. I would have lost it if something had gone wrong on my Europe trip.

Anna, I called and checked everything. They are totally booked except for my flight, which is the last one of the night.

I've done it many times here since it rains so much, both when we first moved here and now whenever people visit. TBH, I just never do my hair on days that we got into the city, and if we aren't doing anything fancy I'll wear a baseball hat too. I wear a jacket with a hood or a hoodie so I can just pop my hood up quick if we are running in and out of stores. But I usually always have an umbrella in my purse too. I just have no intentions of tryig to look great or have my hair done, and it makes the rain much more tolerable. Oh, and I don't wear mascara.

  • Did you specifically ask about stand-by though? If they have a flight that's booked but not oversold, your chances of two people not making the flight might be decent. They can usually give you an idea of how likely you are to get off the stand-by list based on how many other people are on there, how full the flight is, etc.

O'Hare. And its the Hyatt or something that's literally right in the airport. One thing that really bothers me about that is we live next to an airport now. Like we cant' get away from the freaking noise!

  • Yeah, you can still do the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium cause they are right next to each other. There are also passes that you can get to visit both for a little less money. Maybe you guys can do that on Sunday and since the hotel is in the airport, they should hold your luggage for you.

Saturday you can just spend on Mag Mile, shop, eat and see the sights. You can take a cab to Willis Tower and there are places to eat around there.

I need to be a tour guide while I am off this summer. Or at least a trip advisor. Haha

  • My first trip to Chicago we told our cab driver to take us to this hotel, but then I tried to force the address in his hand and he kept saying, "no, no, no, I know where it is" and I said 3 times that I wanted to make sure b/c plans could have changed.

Well plans HAD changed and we were going to someone's house, which was the address listed on the paper I was trying to show him. When we pulled up to the hotel I asked the bellhop guy if that's where we were and he said, "nope, nowhere close". So the cabby was arguing with us to pay him.

I had just turned 18 and was freaking out b/c I didn't know what to do. The manager of the hotel came out and gave the cabby a piece of her mind and made him leave (unpaid) and then hooked us up with a driver.

And guess what? It was still the most kick a$$ trip ever!!!!

So no worries. Don't let a little rocky start get you down!

  • I bet you're still super cute in a baseball cap, LVB :)
