NWR: How do you feel about arguably NON charitable donations or volunteer work?

Trying to liven the place up, plus I'm genuinely curious. I call these non-charitable because a non-profit is not involved in any way (and in fact, these both involve for-profit businesses).

I have two examples.

1) I'm attending an event this weekend. It's a food truck/bar event and some of the proceeds from the sale of the food will go to pay for the surgery of a dog who is owned by a guy who owns a different food truck-like thing (so a member of the "traveling food community" in LA). I'm going because I happen to like the bar and the food truck, but "hey, come raise money so I can pay for my dog's surgery!" rubs me the wrong way. I think I'm the only one. Not that I don't care for animals, but I paid thousands in cat medical bills last year and it never occurred to me that I could pass on that cost to others, you know?

2) A restaurant I've been to and "liked" on FB had an electrical fire a few weeks ago. They sent out a mass invite about a cleaning project they are having on Tuesday. Basically, they are asking their customers to volunteer to clean the soot and water damage in the restaurant. For free. But hey, they'll give you snacks and drinks. This rubbed me the wrong way in the "free labor" sort of category that we warn people about here all the time. In this instance, actually, if they asked their family and friends to help, it wouldn't be an issue, but for their customers it seems to be crossing a line.

Neither of these make me angry, per se, but I won't be, like, reposting them or encouraging people to do it. What says E?
