RE: Last week's post about tipping live musicians

Last week there was a discussion about tipping live musicians, and the consensus was that you always tip them. But I'm confused, because I thought the rule was that if they own thier own business you don't tip. My guitartist doesn't work for anyone else, so which rule applies here?

My photog and DOC are also self-employed.... does the rule apply to them? Oh and while I'm at it, my photog will have an assistant that's not self-employed. Do I tip only that person and not the main one that I hired? Or give her a tip and leave it up to her to distribute it?

Sorry for the late F/U, but I was super busy at work at the time and this thought just popped into my head.

  • As a musician, I wouldn't expect to get a tip.

We didn't tip our string quartet.

That's interesting, because there was at least one musician in that thread talking about how they NEED to be tipped.

Nobody said they NEEDED to be tipped. They just said it was nice.  I posted the question and YES I will be tipping each member of the trio.

I also tip the owners of businesses as well.

  • I believe I might be the musician you're referring to, and Smokey is right - I never said that anyone HAD to or NEEDED to tip musicians.  Just that I personally think it's a nice thing to do, especially considering I also work in the field, and like to support the brother(sister?)hood.

What I took objection with in that thread, is that another poster (SophistryLiz) suggested that she would not be tipping her band because "we're already paying them like $1400 . . . "

The only factor as to whether or not you should tip a musician is if you appreciate their service and feel they have gone above and beyond to make your event special.  The excuse that "well they're really expensive" is a load of crap, and just means that you should have budgeted better.
