My sister has an emerald and the thing is gorgeous. I thought about doing a sapphire for a few minutes since it both my birthstone and my H's but my H is much too traditional for that and my feeling is that there are plenty of years to buy other stones. A diamond says engagement to me personally.

I've got diamonds, but one of my BMs has a ruby flanked by emeralds. It's her style, and like you mentioned, a bargain for her FI.

One of my coworkers also gave a sapphire to his FI. He's not from around here, and was really worried about whether he was doing something wrong by not getting her a diamond. It was really sweet, and I managed to talk him down. She loved the ring!

Didn't see your question, but I'm guessing it's about less traditional engagement rings?  Mine is a pearl ring and I couldn't love it more.

My FI got me a gorgeous emerald cut Amethyst engagement ring, with tiny diamonds in the band.  I absolutely love that it is different, and since it was so much cheaper than a diamond, it also quite big.  We're talking $150 for 2 cts!  The only thing is that we've already had to replace the stone because it's also much softer than diamonds, and the first one chipped
