What do you think about this? (dog/Vick related)

From ESPN.com:

Michael Vick who was banned by the judge who sentenced him on dogfighting charges from ever owning another dog, says he misses being a dog owner and would like to have one as a pet someday.  "I would love to get another dog in the future.  I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process." - Michael Vick

Thoughts?  If the judge hadn't banned him from owning another dog, do you think he should be allowed to?

  • I've stated my opinion on Vick numerous times but I'm not buying what he is selling.  After reading "The Lost Dogs" I just can't stomach the thought of him owning another.  I'd like to know what exactly he misses about being a dog owner.

  • No. He may very well be rehabilitated (doesn't change my opinion of him), but he also lost that privilege, IMO.
  • Yeah, is it the teeth yanking or the drowing that he misses?

  • Also, in my mind, it's akin to giving anyone with a former addiction their drug of choice.
  • no he should not own another dog  and he really needs to shut his mouth about the subject.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

  • I just read this today:

    http://www.officialvickdogchewtoy.com/Wordpress/official-vick-dog-chew-toy/why-do-so-many-people-still-like-mike-vick/

And I should add does he miss beating the heads against the concrete, electrocuting, or drowning "his dogs"?  Some dog owner - here I play tug and fetch with my dogs when I am not giving them belly rubs - clearly I must be doing something wrong.

Maybe he should've thought about that before starting his little side business.
  • No, he should not be allowed to have any pets.

I heard an announcer on ESPN the other day talking about how he has such a great come back story and it pissed me off. The only reason he had a come back is because he did horrible things to dogs and went to jail for breaking the law. If he had just been a decent person he would never have had to go away, so there would be no come back. I think that term should be used for people who beat cancer or something, not jerks who go to prison for making dogs fight eachother.
  • What an idiot. Not that this is a surprise, but seriously? You miss owning dogs? I'm pretty sure they don't miss being owned by you.

And it's such a shame that you performing unspeakable acts of cruelty makes it tough to explain to your daughters why they can't have a pet. I bet when they grow up enough to know what you did, you'll be having plenty more tough conversations - that is if they still even speak to you.

I actually didn't know he had daughters and I am even more appalled by his behavior.

According to the police report in the book, 2 people confessed that they witnessed Vick tossing his 'house dogs' into the ring because he found it funny.  Ha. ha.

Anna I totally agree - man just the thought of all this gets me all worked up and mad!

People on facebook are like he did time...NOT for the animal abuse!  Plus there are plenty of great athletes out there that are not felons.  Yet others are like give him a second chance.  I'm sorry but if you say the whole second chance crap then open your neighborhood to felons that are NOT celebrities then talk to me.   Which most people won't.

I should add I am friends with an ex-con - he was a drug dealer and has done a 180 - great guy was young and stupid but how many people have given HIM a second chance?  Not many...I can tell you that.  I'm sure if he was a celebrity he would easily have had doors opened for him.

  • Do I think it's possible that he could get a dog and keep it as a family pet and never abuse it?  Yeah, but I still don't think he deserves that chance or that animal's love & devotion.

I know :-( but I like to try and think about the good people that worked to save these dogs.  A lot of them are certified therapy dogs and visit children in the hospital.

  • Absolutely never is when he should own a dog or any other animal.

And pink, I totally agree about the good athlete = untarnished no matter what.  I hate watching Steeler games because Rapistberger is so gross already not to mention his history with women. But everyone's like "oh but he wins games!" SO WHAT?

  • Very unpopular opinion: I do not hate Michael Vick. I think what he did was vile and abhorrent, but he did rehabilitate himself and I'm happy to see him doing so well as QB this season.

That said...no way in hell should he ever be allowed to own a dog again.

Genuine question: how do you know this? I really don't know the details of what his punishment/rehab was, so I'm curious as to what you're saying he did that makes him less likely to abuse animals in the future.

It seems to me like he would go to whatever program to look good and comply with any sentence, but I don't really think people can change so much that they go from someone as sick and cruel toward animals as he clearly was to a normal person capable of properly caring for an animal.
