XP; HM-R: Paula to hit our HM spot, we leave in 6 days

Hi, I know this isn't etiquette related, and I'm not a "regular" post on E board, but I know you're an active board and also a lot of you are married...so I'm hoping you won't mind my asking for your opinion/advice

We're HMing in Riveria Maya and it looks like it's supposed to be hit by hurricane Paula tomrw.

It's currently a category 2 storm...and we're supposed to arrive next Monday, 10/18.

Should we stick with the plan to go there?  Or utilize our trip insurance and switch our HM??? (For anyone with similar previous experience, we've booked everything through Apple Vacations).

TIA!

  • It looks like they're showing it mostly hitting in the next couple of days.  I think it should be well out of the area by next Monday.  I would wait and see what happens- if there is a lot of damage, utilize the trip insurance.

I've been through several hurricanes- 95% of the time, they're no big deal, just a lot of rain and wind.  Category 2 is really minor.

  • What's your deadline to make changes?  I'd wait until the last minute.

  • I didn't think trip insurance covered hurricanes. I could of sworn that is what our TA told us when we booked our HM.
  • I think you should be fine if you aren't going until next monday... right now the storm isn't very strong to do major damage... I would wait it out another couple of days.

  • We talked with our TA last week and she said we are covered to switch for this, however I guess I should call and ask the deadline.

The forecast for the start of the HM is low 80's but pretty much 30-60% chance of rain everyday...I'm wondering if that's the after-effect of a hurricane or it it's like Hawaii where it rains sometimes everyday but just for a bit and then is sunny?

Agh, I'm just nervous to pay for a HM and go have no-sunny and cooler weather.  I guess that's the fear with any tropical HM though?
  • That weather sounds pretty normal for this time of year down there.

  • We went to Riviera Maya in August for our honeymoon and it rained briefly in the afternoon I'd say 4 or 5 out of the 7 days.  And one of the days (the one we went snorkeling) it stormed all almost all day.  It was high 80's the whole week whether it was raining or not.

Whether or not you to move the trip would (for me) depend on how hard it would be to rearrange work schedules and stuff to fit in the new trip.

  • There are pics in my bio and there's one or two of the rain off-shore.  You could see it coming and had plenty of time to get inside.

Unless, of course, you were on a snorkeling boat like us and then you just had to deal with it, haha.

Could HAVE sworn, not could of sworn. YW from the grammar princess. Different trip insurance policies cover different events.
  • Thanks for you input ladies.  We'll wait it out and see.  I was in RM in 2008 for my bro's DW wedding at this time and it was gorgeous, so we'll just hope for the same!
