    Hey, that's neat!

The msnbc article says that it looks for patterns in the cells that humans can't see.  I'm curious what patterns she is looking for in cells.  Is it what the cells look like or can it actually detect the proteins inside cells and see what they are doing.

One of the keys to cancer research (at least the level I work) is what proteins are being expressed where and why aren't they responding to cellular cues the way a healthy cell would.  By the time a cell "looks" morphologically different, the disease is more widespread than one cell that is starting to operate poorly.

Clearly I'm interested in the methodology.  Very neat.  Thanks for sharing!  Maybe I'll write a blog post on it now!  :-)
  • Joy, I have a newfound respect and love for you. I didn't know you worked on cancer research.
  • Holy crap.  Wow.

All I was doing at 17 were mainly things I shouldn't have been doing.  That kid is amazing.

Going on ten years now.  My doctoral research was on HPV (looking for drugs to treat those already infected and showing signs of cancer) and I also did some work on another major gatekeeper of cells that is knocked out in cancer (p53).

Allegedly I do cancer research now, but it's more "How does this protein work because it's really messed up in cancer!"  Haha.

Seriously - I'm googling trying to find her methods.  She's a smartypants!
  • Wow, I hope she's able to go to a great school that can really cultivate her talents.  If she is able to come up with something like this in high school, imagine what she can do with more training.

  • Wow. I have no words. 17?!?

I hope a good research hospital snatches her up and pays for her entire university education. This young lady is going to go FAR.

Wow. That is something to be thankful for.
  • Wow, good for her!  I have a feeling we'll be seeing her name pop up again in the future.
