Infant/Toddler Seating

I'm wondering at what age an infant or toddler should be assigned their own seat. As I start to develop my seating chart, I'm wondering if my three year old niece will need her own seat or will want to sit on her mom's lap during the ceremony and reception. Am I supposed to rent high-chairs?? And what is the age cut-off for getting your own seat?? Lastly, if the child is under 1, should I give the mom an open seat next to hers to place the baby carrier so she doesn't need to hold the baby the entire evening? Thanks for the help!

  • I think you should have a seat for every butt, no matter how small that butt is.  As far as high chairs or booster seats, if the venue does not provide them, I'd talk to the parents to see if they need one or not.

  • I agree with J&K.  A seat for every butt.  I have been in contact with the parents of children (under the age of 3) and asked if they would like a high chair.  I have to rent about 6 high chairs, since our venue does not provide them.
  • As others have said, babies come with a lot of stuff, so even if they might sit on mom or dad's lap, I suspect the parents will still appreciate a place to lay all their crap.

  • Ask the parents.

We're providing a high chair for my 18 month old niece, but my 4 month old nephews will be in their bouncy chairs or car seat carriers if they aren't being held.  (but not chairs to put them on - this would be horribly unstable and dangerous!)

A three year old might not need a high chair, but I'd definitely provide a chair for them...  Most three year olds want their own of what every everyone else has.
  • I agree about the chair for every butt.
