im sure this has been asked BUT...

Is it rude to put "formal attire" on an invite? A few guests have already asked me...

  • Yes, it is rude. And it really doesn't mean anything either.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • I would leave it off the invite, unless it's a requirement of your venue. It's not generally polite to tell adults how to dress.
  • I think the consensus is that it's not polite to tell adults what to wear, but somewhat acceptable if a jacket is required by your venue.
  • Yeah, if it's required I would definitely put it...otherwise I'm sure people can look at the venue and figure it out themselves/word of mouth.
  • The only time you can specify attire is if it is black/white tie (super formal) or if the venue has a dress code.  Otherwise, the formality of your invitation indicates the formality of the event.
  • I'm going to require everyone at my wedding to wear one red sock and one blue sock. Can I put that on the invitations?

Umm, yeah...because I definitely would have worn one yellow and one blue if I didn't know. I would have felt kinda out of place.
  • If the venue has a dress code, then that can be included on an insert, and I would try to quote the venue exactly so it's THEM telling guests what to wear, and not YOU.

I agree with word of mouth. Make sure both sets of parents know, and you're good to go. It's also somewhat acceptable to put on a wedding web site, especially if there are special conditions (proper footwear for being outside, which I doubt is your issue) and if you can quote the venue.

And Sarah, only if they are the same level of formality. No cotton socks at my wedding!

  • I would use word of mouth and maybe list something about it on the website.

Most people can judge by the location what kind of attire to wear.

I'd probably wear a sundress to a wedding at the VFW Hall. I'd wear something much nicer to a wedding at a winery.
