Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • Nope, and it's not even a big deal if you don't have one at all.
  • People typically view these as a party given in your honor, so it's generally viewed as impolite to honor yourself by throwing yourself an engagement party.

No it is not ok, but it is ok to just throw a random party. I don't get why everyone needs an engagement party so badly. Just have a barbeque for kicks.

Next thing you know, we'll be starting threads to talk about why we all like each other.

We didn't have one and aren't planning one. Save your money for the wedding/honeymoon

  • I've known people who've had very casual ones. As in two days after the proposal they invite family over to the house to have dinner and celebrate. With our friends this means that by the end of the night there are 50 drunk people at your house.
  • Im fine with it as long as you state "no gifts, please."

Nope. It's improper to mention gifts in any way, shape, or form on your invitations, unless it's for a shower, which you still wouldn't throw for yourself.

Eh....Im thinking casual YAY WE'RE ENGAGED bbq or something....perhaps with an evite?  If I received something like that it wouldnt bug me in the least.  I like parties, I dont like people who throw a million of them in the hopes of getting a million gifts.

  • We got engaged in December and will be married a year from July.  I want to have all my friends, his friends, and our families over for a big "get to know each other" shindig this summer.  People keep calling it an "engagement party" - so, I guess I'm throwing myself one??

I always assumed they were thrown in your honor, though.

It may not bug you, but it's still not polite. It's not okay to mention gifts. Just throw a party, no label attached. Throwing a party specifically for an engagement is still a party in your honor.

  • I don't see why this is such a big deal! I mean if you are looking for gifts, then it is a little strange...but if it is a simple get together just so everyone can meet and hang out, I think it's fine!! I wouldn't send out fancy invites or anything though...evites and phone calls!
