Cake Question

I know this isn't an ettiquette question but I was hoping to get some quick answers and you ladies are always so helpful.

When you ordered your cake, did you assume one slice of cake per guest?  We will be hovering right about equal for number of slices our cake is vs. number of guests at the reception.  I need to let my cake lady know soon if we need an extra sheet cake but we dont have our final numbers yet.

Part of me thinks one slice per guest but then what if people want an additional slice?  I know I'm over thinking this but I just wanted to see what others did.  If it matters, the cake is being served to the guests vs. guests picking it up themselves.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Cake Question

  • As long as you have enough so that each guest gets a slice you're good.

  • I would go with one slice per guest.

  • One per guest is what you should go by.  Not everyone will eat the cake, keep that in mind.

  • We really like cake so we ordered extra to make sure everyone could have a *big* piece if they wanted. But that was just us...most people will be just fine with one per guest.

  • Thanks ladies!  That's what I thought but just wanted to check :)
  • I think one per guest is fine.

If you are worried about it not being enough, you could ask your baker to do a couple of sheet cakes for you just in case.
  • I asked for more cake than guests because we had three flavors, and I wasn't sure if one flavor would be more popular than the others.  If you only have one flavor offering, I'd just do one slice per guest.
  • We're going to have a little bit extra, but that's because I wanted 3 tiers. Our cake lady said that will feed 100, but we're only going to have about 85 people. I know some of our guests will be glad to help with any leftovers.  =)
  • We're doing extra because FI wanted a taller cake and I wanted our guests to be able to have big slices. We're expecting around 30-40 people and got a cake for 75.

  • I was told by my cake baker that she uses the following to determine if you need more or less cake:

    More:
    Open Bar
    App/Dessert only reception
3 or more hours of reception after dinner

    Less:
    Other dessert/food favors
    Shorter reception
    Other midnight snack

  • I always believe it's better to have more than not enough. I ordered more cake and more food then what I was told I needed. I also agree with rerawalt's post.
