Dress Code

Is it bad etiquette to tell my guests the dress code? Discribing the attire to be "Church Clothes".

Re: Dress Code

  • Yeah it's generally considered rude or tacky for you to do that unless the venue itself has a dress code like no jeans or something.  Your guests are adults, they'll know how to dress for a wedding being held in a church.  And even if they don't, it won't change your wedding or make it any less special.

  • Unless your church or venue has a specific dress code the guests need to follow, then yes it is rather rude. Im pretty sure most of them will know how to dress properly for the wedding.
  • Is it because your venue requires it? Otherwise, you should not dictate what your guests wear.

  • Yes.  You get to pick the time and location.  They get to pick their clothes.  Presumably if you tell them it's in a church, they'll figure out "Church Clothes" on their own.

  • I know people who wear jeans and t-shirts to church.  Just sayin'.

  • The only thing I can see that it would be ok to say is "Please have shoulders covered" if that is required by the church. Everything should be left up to them. They presumably know how to dress themselves.

Yup, I always wear jeans to church.  So if I saw "church clothes" on an invitation, I'd be like "Woohoo, I get to wear jeans!"
  • Yes it's bad etiquette.  Please don't tell adults how to dress.

Which might be fine, depending on the church. I wouldn't. I grew up wearing skirts to church, and nice dresses for Christmas and Easter. FI is Catholic and many of my Catholic friends (including him) could get away with what my grandmother would call "slacks," i.e. non-jean pants, and turtlenecks or sweaters. However, on the flip side, some heavily traditional Catholic churches may require women to cover their hair, shoulders and knees. If a question of not being allowed in, then okay. Otherwise, no. And you know that, Night. ;-)

I understand that's not all churches, but some do allow jeans and t-shirts.  Why are you winking at me?

  • if you want people to really dress up for your wedding (if it is a fancier wedding) I've seen people put "black tie optional" on the reception card.  This way, your guests don't have to dress super fancy if they don't want to (because it does say optional) but many will make an effort to wear something nicer....meaning no jeans/khaki's ect.  Just be prepared for calls asking exactly what "black tie optional means" because you'll probably get them!

  • I misinterpreted. I thought you wer playing devil's advocate and saying she SHOULD put it on there because some people might think it's okay to wear jeans, since they wear jeans to churches. The wink was sort of a "I KNOW you know better than that!"

  • I understand now.  No, I was saying "Church Clothes" is a dumb thing to put even if she were goign to.

  • 'Church clothes' is highly bizarre clothing advice in my book. If you told me to wear church clothes, I'd have no clue what you wanted me to wear.

Truthfully, most people know how to dress for weddings... and those who don't won't even come onto your radar on the day, I promise.

  • Well, i'm assuming they are adults that can dress themselves so yes, but form to tell them a dress code, IMHO.
