Bored? Help a girl out with her must-play/do-not-play lists!

We need to give these to the DJ pretty soon. Please let me know if there are any on the must-play list that you think will clear the dance floor like a stink bomb. We also don't have much on the do-not-play list, so I'd love suggestions.

I hope I don't F up the format, I'm copying the list from Xcel.

Please play:
Twist and Shout (Beatles)
Psycho Killer (Talking Heads)
Mr. Brightside (Killers)
SexxyBack (JT!)
Pour Some Sugar On Me (Def Leppard)
Dancing Queen (ABBA, requested for FFIL, believe it or not!0
Rock Your Body (JT)
At Last (Etta James)
Billie Jean (MJ)
Thriller (MJ)
The Way You Make Me Feel (MJ)
Shipping Up To Boston (Dropkick Murphys)
The Way You Look Tonight (Frank Sinatra)
Dancin' In The Moonlight (Toploader)
The Twist (Chubby Checker)
Shout (Isley Brothers)
Kiss (Prince)
Jesse's Girl (Rick Springfield)
Take Me Home Tonight (Eddie Money)
Hold The Line (Toto)

Do-not-play list:
Cotton-Eyed Joe

  • Um...the chicken dance was a no-go for us.

We did to the Cha-cha slide with pride though. ;)
  • Mr. Brightside seems like an odd choice to me.

Yeah, the words are weird... It's been my favorite song since I was 17 and I always play it at every party, but I suppose it is all about infidelity. It just sounds so upbeat if you don't listen to the lyrics. But it might be a veto, I suppose
  • I'm obsessed with "Hey Ya!" by Outkast, so had to throw that in as a recommenation in the must-play-ring.

I HATE: Brickhouse and Love Shack, so those are going on my do not play list.
  • Eh, I didn't just mean the lyrics - it seems more like a head bopping song than a dancing one.

    Also, to be helpful
Apache - Sugarhill Gang was a huge hit on the dancefloor for us.

    I like Mr. Brightside!

And we've asked the DJ to play this after our grandparents go home, but since the majority of our friends are male we want Flight of the Conchords Too Many D!cks on the Dance Floor.

Also, we just started our list last week and I'm totally going to copy all of your songs and add them to ours. HAH!

  • I disagree with Peony about Celebration - after Apache, that was the song that got most people on the dance floor, because it's familiar to all ages - so even my grandparents were up and dancing.

    image
  • haha anytime I think about "Celebration" I think of that Friends episode where Ross learns that on his bagpipes for Monica & Chandler's wedding and asks them to sing along while he's practicing and Pheobe just goes "eeeeh, eeeeh, eeeeeeeh!!"  Cracks.me.up.

  • I'm totally catering to our guests with Cupid Shuffle, Electric Slide and some western ones like Slap Leather.

    But our musts are:
    Apache- Sugarhill Gang
    Saturday Night- Ozomatli
    and some disco.

But the Chicken Dance is where I draw the line. And I also don't want today's rap, we'll kick it old school.
  • Oh and my FI loves Shipping up to Boston, how would one dance that? Mosh pit?

I love Mr. Brightside, but it definitely doesn't sound upbeat to me.  It sounds depressed in a frantic, I'm-about-to-lose-it-and-hang-myself-in-the-closet sort of a way.  If you play it at every party and your friends understand that it's just your song -- go for it!  But from this outsider's perspective, it does seem like an odd choice.

I think it's adorable and hilarious that your FFIL requested Dancing Queen!
    image
  • i said no line dances.  I HATE them but if they get requested then that's fine.

    some other must plays:

party in the usa (judge me)
    Shout by the isley brothers
    piano man by billy joel

  • And Mustang Sally. It's my family's theme song but I'm not sure why. It's a must play at all family functions and weddings.

  • I have a huge play list in my bio
  • I cant stand YMCA my friend got married in march and she played that, really??? Really?????

  • For our mixed young/older crowd, we did lots of older stuff: Sinatra, Sweet Caroline, that kind of thing.  We vetoed all Billy Idol, anything about sex, centerfolds, boobs, whatever.  Basically, I wanted my grandma to be able to hear every lyric without blushing.

It got lots of people dancing (older adults, too) and even H's grandparents danced the night away.

  • Our do not play list is the Chicken Dance, Electric Slide and the Macarena. Also no to any Britney Spears, Ricky Martin or Savage Garden. I have an inexplicable hate for Savage Garden.

Our must play list includes Apache, Rapper's Delight, and any Journey, Steve Miller, and Eagles.

I love Flight of the Conchords!! I think that's a really cute idea with the majority of your friends being male.

I definitely agree with your "do not play" list, but I would add the Chicken Dance to it if it was my list. I hate that song! Oh, and I love Dropkick Murphys, but I don't know if you can really dance to them at a wedding.

there were other Kool and the Gang songs we did.. but celebration is over played but still good if it worked for you.. I forget what we did but it got people up on the dance floor as well.. hmm or maybe it was not kool and the gang.. maybe it was "we are family"
