Inviting Hairstylists

I've been going to the same hairsylist for years, and I don't trust anyone else to do my hair for such an important event as my wedding.  But if it's over an hour (more, probably) from the town where she works, should I invite her to the wedding? Or do I pay for her travel expenses and pay her for the time lost at her salon?  We are not friends, and I wouldn't invite her to the wedding otherwise.

Re: Inviting Hairstylists

  • Mine was kind of far away and she just said she had a travel fee, which was $50. And the travel fee was the same no matter how many people she did or how long she was there. I would ask about something like that.
  • I am in a similar situation with the hair dresser that is doing my hair, as a gift from my maid of honor she is paying for me to get my hair done so I am just inviting her and her husband to the wedding and reception for having to drive so far out. She seems cool with it so far. Hope it works out for you one way or another!
  • Yeah, I would just ask her if she would be willing to do on-site hair styling for you. She will probably let you know of whatever extra fees she charges for that.

  • I do make-up, and work in a hair salon, and I would not expect an invite. But what I would charge for eg. would be - my regular cost of doing the make-up (hair-ups in your case) in the salon, + a call out fee. My call out fee is usually around $50, but that would be to say a hotel or home close to the salon, which would mean I could be back at work for the afternoon. A wedding as far away as yours would mean I would be taking the whole day away from the salon, so yours would be the only income for the day. I would then want to charge you would I would make on an average Saturday (assuming you are getting married on a Saturday) which is anywhere from $500-$1000 for me.

Sorry this is getting long and complicated! Basically if you were my fave client and I loved you, I would try and do it for you for $400ish, and cut my loses, if you were a random client, I would probably charge $75 pp, assuming it was you and 2-3 bridesmaids, maybe a MOB, and also a $100-$150 call out fee, each way, and then also gas. I know hairstylists who will not even leave the salon for less than $1000.

Basically you just have to ask her! Every situation is different. But again, I would not expect an invite, because it is my job, I would be getting paid, then I would want to go home!
