Wedding Etiquette Forum

Dear photographers:

1 - if your fancy flash site, or faux-fancy slow-loading site crashes my computer, I'm not hiring you

2 - Do any of you take photos of the ceremony any more? Despite our bridezilla moments, this really is all about the vows.

Guess I should cancel the whole thing, then.

  • To answer your second one, some churches don't allow photography or those pictures are for only the bride and groom to see. Sorry you seem to be having issues finding a photographer.
  • You know vendors aren't allowed to post on these forums (as vendors).

    1 - thanks

2 - I got plenty of pictures of my ceremony.

As a photographer( NOT weddings, thank the good Lord) I will say that the reason you probably aren't seeing many shots of the actual vows in a portfolio is because that isn't what people want to see. More people are going towards to photojournalism/ natural light style and away from posed or traditional. People are drawn in by the fun creative shots, not by shots of the vows. I assure you your photog WILL get shots of the vows....

This. And if you like the style of one, you can most likely request to see full weddings done by them. Rarely do photographers put EVERY photo they have taken on their websites.

I found a great example of some heels posed by a wine glass that would be a perfect must-have shot for you ;) If I wasn't being accused of being a vendor. Which I'm not. Just venting.

My ceremony is in a rather dark room, so I'm trying to find someone who can shoot in darkly lit areas. I don't have a lot of "details," so I'm focusing on finding someone who can capture emotion instead of purposely placed well-wishes written on river rocks. They're not giving me much to go on....

We actually booked our photographer because of those emotion shots -- she's killer with them. I would try and make a list of the top 3-5 you like and then set appointments with them. I would ask to see not just their portfolio, but the entirety of a wedding so you can get a feel for their priorities and how they work with different light.

Exactly, it's an entire different skill set, and some photogs don't post any, any, ceremony shots. I get they have a variety, but on quite a few I'm left wondering if the couple even got married or if they all just dressed up and ate cake!

  • I shot a couple weddings in the past and trust me the photographer will always shoot the ceremony but like PPs said very few select those photos to put in their portfolio for various reasons.

1.) Most of the photos will start to look the same because there are only so many vantage points the photographer can shoot the ceremony from and the B&G are pretty stationary most of the ceremony.

2.) A lot of weddings are indoors and the lighting is poor so it doesn't always make for the best shot. Most churches won't allow flash photography so chances are not all the photos they're taking are exposing properly.

  • OP, have you posted on your local board to ask for photographer suggestions?

I would also suggest, if you can, going to a wedding expo so you can actually meet photogs and look through their sample albums. That's how we found our photographer.
  • Keep in mind, too, that a lot of chapels and churches (and some other places) don't allow flash photography. If your ceremony is held in a dark-ish room, you may not get good photos of the ceremony, regardless of the photographer. Good luck!
