Black Friday

Who went shopping and what did you get?

Re: Black Friday

  • Me.  I'm stupid. (This is kind of a XP from SB.)

    12am- Wal-Mart for $5 fleece, $7 Wii games, $4 board games, $10 Blue-Ray and $9 tupperware.

1:30am- Aeropostale, 50% off entire store.  $15 sweatshirt, $7 tees, $3 underwear for the fella.

2:30- Old Navy for $15 cardigans, $15 jeans

    3:30am- Sbarro break.

    4:30am- Home Depot for $28 shop-vac, $5 30-pack Duracell batteries, $10 tool bags.

Bed at 6am. Work at 9am.  Clearly, I did not think this through.
This was my first time doing this.  I feel like an idiot and like I won a war at the same time.

  • I did all of my black Friday shopping online.  Monday I got a laptop and Flip camera from Best Buy's sale.  I have their Silver Rewards card which let me shop the sale online early.

Yesterday I bought my Godson a dual screen portable DVD player from Target's sale.  I'm debating if I even want to go anywhere today.  Those were the 3 main things I wanted to get.  I might to Target just to see what movies they still have left on sale.

  • I did not get my Kindle from Amazon.  Apparently, the time that it takes to go, "Holy crap!  $100 off?!  *click*" was just long enough to miss out.
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • FI and I went to Lowes.  Got a prelit 6 1/2 foot tree for $38 (normally $98), a 6 foot ladder for $19 (normally $60-70), and picked up a shopvac for my uncle for $29 (normally $80).  That and two plastic storage containers, a blow up santa for the front lawn, extension cords, and some other stuff for $155 (we were proud of ourselves).   I have to go back without FI to get him a reciprocating saw for Christmas.  I might also stop at Home Depot to see if they have any sales.

Also we went to PetSmart and go a stocking and some toys for the cats and dog (50% off all holiday stuff, which was sweet).

  • Workn, there is NO way I would have gone shopping and then to work. No way. FI had to be at work at 5 AM and won't be home until 9 PM tonight. He already texted me and said the store was dead.

We started at the mall at 12 AM
Express-sweater and dress shirt for Rick, t-shirts for me
    Forever 21-3 cardigans for $30

    Walmart
    Scrabble for $12
    a few DVD's

Waited in line @ Kohls for an hour...
2 shirts for me for $20
A big fluffy blanket for $8 (originally $30)
    Gift for my SS

We were going to attempt Target, but the line was wrapped around the building and people had filled the Target lot, the Applebees lot next door, and were walking over from the Lowe's across the street. No thank you

I had a scary moment at Kohls-I had a wristlet purse and it slipped off my wrist as we were walking in and was getting trampled. THANKFULLY a nice man saw it and picked it up.
  • H and I got up at 1am, literally bundled ourselves up in snowsuits, and went and stood outside of Best Buy starting at about 2am. The 3 hour wait was full of everything from drunken college students to a near riot when some idiot tried to cut in the line just before the store opened at 5. Oh yes, it was fun.

We got an awesome new computer (that we needed badly) + all the accessories for it, and we got a flat screen monitor for BIL - he will pay us for it when we see him tomorrow.

Now the computer's all set up and I'm going to nap on the couch for a while. :)
  • I would love to do it some year, but after working in 2 retail stores during college and seeing all the crazies, it might be a while before I get up that early to go shopping.
  • You are all insane.  In.Sane.  Never, ever, ever, will I shop a Black Friday.  *shiver*  It brings back bad membryes and I walk around like a shell shocked person.

    Story time?
  • My mom and sis went at 10 am.  Yech.  I shopped online a bit, but that's it.  Nothing earth-shattering.  :D

There's no particular story- just 5 years of retail management.  Luckily, I just worked at the mall, so I didn't have to be in as stupidly early as stand-alone's like Target, Kohls, etc.  But yeah.  The Christmas season was pretty much ruined for me.
  • Damn LVB.  Sounds like you cleaned up. :)
  • Snips, that's understandable then. I definitely have more respect for retail employees after Rick's worked retail for the last year and a half. I couldn't believe how many places were open all day yesterday. I felt bad for all of the employees who didn't get to spend the day w/ their familes.

I sincerly thanked every employee that I came in to contact with.  There were some cheery, helpful people working in the wee hours of the morning.  It was nice.

  • Workn, totally agreed. And there were actually some very cheery shoppers around too. FBIL and I stood behind 2 older women in line at Kohls for 45 minutes and ended up helping them carry stuff to their car. We both got hugs and "Merry Christmas'" at the end of it Smile
  • This was my first year going without my mom and sisters- not nearly as much fun navigating the shops without them.

I got some good deals on things like sweaters and necklaces for my my family, but the best deal by far was what I got on Amazon for FI.  Adobe CS5 (think Photoshop and 7 other essential design software programs), is $1,900 full price.  Student/teacher price is $450- I got it for $380!

  • Wrkn and Jill, that's so good of you to remember the people working today.  My dad's working electronics register at Target today and FI is putting in 10 hrs at the art store and I just know they're both going to be exhausted at the end of the day.  I think everyone should work retail or customer service at some point in their lives for another perspective.

  • Yay!  Thanks ladies! : )  I actually got shoved by a customer once during christmas.  She was a whoreface.
  • Ruby, my FI sells furniture, so it's been much easier to remember how crappy people can be. I actually apologized to the girl at the grocery store yesterday because I felt so bad that she had to be there.

And Amazon-find FTW! That is an AMAZING deal
  • My FMIL sells insurance over the phone, and I always feel so bad for her when she gets shat on by her customers.  So I try to be really kind to people on the phone and thank them over and over for their help.

I got so angry with Comcast last week when my cable and internet were out the one weekend FI was out of town and they couldn't get anything right- I was so short with the guy on the phone, but once I cooled down I apologized so much because it wasn't his fault.

I worked today at 4am at Target and only ONE person said "Thank you" when I told her where something was. The rest just demanded where something was than stormed off.
After work I  got a new desk chair for $50, some picture frame sets, 2 flash drives anda mini SD card for my phone and a bunch of fleeces. Now I'm about to go crash on the couch for a few hours, I'm thinking.

I totally agree. Then they wouldn't be complete asses when shopping and rip stuff apart :/

  • Seriously.  I spent six months folding the t-shirt table at Old Navy and I still stop to refold when I'm shopping.  It used to make me furious when I'd be working for 45 minutes to fix a table of shirts only to have someone come over, dig to the bottom of every pile and undo all my work in 10 seconds, while I was still standing there folding!
