Who should I tip?

I'm renting a venue where the bartender and wait staff come with the rental costs. Should I still tip the bartender and each member of the wait staff?

It would just feel real awkward to me trying to hunt down each member of the staff at the end of the night.

Should I tip them?

Re: Who should I tip?

  • I think you should talk to the venue and ask how they handle tipping and whether or not it's included in your cost.

I think that the knot's tipping guide is on the cheapo side

  • my venue had gratuity included for wait staff and bartenders, but the outside vendors gratuitys are up to us to handle seperately, CHECK with you venue coordinator they should have already informed you.
  • Is there a service charge added to the bill?

If not, then yes, you still tip.  I asked the venue before hand how much staff there was and put tips in an envelopes for each of them.  The venue distributed them for us.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • My venue has 18% of the total bill added to the contract.  If yours does the same, I'd not feel obligated.

If someone goes above and beyond, wait staff, bartender, etc, or is just giving really really good service, I'd slip them a little something.
